(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's lacrosse team suffered a 15-5 loss to visiting #9-ranked Gettysburg College on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bullets struck first, scoring a pair of goals in the opening 1:31 of the game. Junior Jennifer Morrissey (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) put the Devils on the board, scoring off the ensuing draw control, with an assist from first-year Elizabeth Sitko (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School).
Gettysburg responded with a 6-0 run, led by three goals from Mandy Bruell, to stretch the lead to 8-1 with just over 20 minutes to play in the half. Sophomore Sophie Waine (Wellesley, Mass./Greenwich) broke up the run, scoring on a free position to cut the deficit to 8-2.
Emily Tropsa finished an assist from Maggie Connolly before junior captain Caroline Clancy (Monkton, Md./Hereford) made a nice run, scoring unassisted at the 16:46 mark.
Bruell struck again and then assisted Bridget Kenny for an 11-3 advantage. Senior Carly O'Brien (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton Day) closed out the half with an unassisted goal, scoring the 100th of her career as a Red Devil.
The second half saw solid defensive play from both sides after a quick start by the Bullets. Amanda Borucki took the opening draw and scored, just 36 seconds in the second. Clancy countered with a free position before Abby Baigelman tallied back-to-back scores for a 13-5 advantage at the 17 minute mark.
The teams played scoreless until a final tally at the 8:09 mark made the final, 15-5. Bruell handed out an assist on the final goal to finish with five goals and two assists. Shannon Keeler finished with seven saves while Baigelman recorded a hat-trick as the #9-Bullets improve to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in the Centennial Conference.
Junior Moira Mahoney (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) led the Red Devils with five draw controls and three ground balls wile Clancy finished with a pair of goals. Sophomore Tara Cuddihy (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) came on to make 10 saves in the Red Devil nets. She added four ground balls and caused three turnovers in a solid effort. JoJo Auerbach (Chevy Chase, Md./Bullis School) tallied six saves as well.
The Red Devils slip to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference. They are home again on Saturday, hosting Haverford College at 12:00 pm.
