(Harrisburg, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team tallied runs in each of the first five innings, scoring twice in the fourth, but host Penn State Harrisburg answered and claimed the non-conference match-up, 14-6, on Sunday afternoon.
Ryan Dolan (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Germantown Academy) singled and tacked on a pair of stolen bases to move to third. He put the Red Devils on the board with an RBI from Travis Nardin (Montville, N.J./Morristown Friends).
The Lions scored twice in the bottom of the first as Tom Denneson singled in a run and scored off a double by Chris Iocca. Dickinson pulled even in the top of the second. Robbie Thompson (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) and Sam Wachs (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) both singled and Evan Solomon (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Dolan singled again in the third but was caught trying to swipe his second stolen base. Nardin followed up with a homerun to put the Devils in front, 3-2.
Billy O'Neil (Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy) held the Lions to lone hits in the second and third innings. The Devils responded with two runs in the fourth, loading the bases to set the stage for a two-run double from Alex Rhoads (Princeton, N.J./Solebury School). Dolan and Nardin drew walks around an error off the bat of Benn Parker (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North), stretching the lead to 5-2.
The Lions led-off the fourth with a double and loaded the bases behind a single and a walk. The Devils held with a double-play and a strikeout from O'Neil.
Dolan walked and stole his 22nd base of the season. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI knock by Jonathan Chudacoff (Highland Park, Ill./Berkshire School).
Brian Goodling reached on an error, advancing to second to set up an RBI single for Josh Brubaker to cut the lead to 6-3. They tallied twice in the sixth to make the score, 6-5. Tom Chaney was hit by a pitch and moved to third as Cody Henry doubled. They moved up on a balk, scoring Chaney before Kyle Buchman singled in Henry.
Brubaker singled to trigger a seven-run inning for Harrisburg. He came in on a single and an error. The Lions loaded the bases and Buchman walked in a run to give the host the lead. Goodling singled in two runs as well, helping the Lions to a 12-6 advantage.
The Devils went one-two-three in the eighth and Harrisburg looked to keep the momentum going in the bottom half of the inning. Chaney reached on an error and Henry singled before a double steal put the runners on second and third. Cristian Acosta (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Berkshire School) came on in relief to take over for Charlie Fisher (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) in the eighth.
Buchman followed up with a double to score one run and Henry came across on a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 14-6. First-year Matt Persick (West Chester, Pa./West Chester Henderson) tried to extend the game, reaching on a two-out error in the ninth, but the Lions held for the win.
Will Chaney recorded five strikeouts in 4.1 innings while Derek Slagle came on to earn the win, striking out seven, in 4.2 shutout innings.
Dolan went 2-for-4 with a walk and two stolen bases to go with two runs scored. Thompson drew a pair of walks and went 1-for-2 with a stolen base while Nardin and Rhoads each tallied two RBIs.
The Red Devils slip to 10-20-1 overall. They return home to face Muhlenberg College on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 pm.
