(Allentown, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's lacrosse team overcame a quick start by Muhlenberg to counter and come away with a key 13-7, Centennial Conference win on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mules scored the first three goals of the game before the Red Devils erupted for six straight to turn the tables on the hosts in the first half. Stephanie Umbach struck twice in the opening two minutes, and Kayleigh Theiss gave the Mules a 3-0 advantage at the 26:45 mark.
Talene Bush (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) triggered the run, scoring back-to-back goals, with the second coming off an assist from Katie Iverson (Marblehead, Mass./Pingree School). Maddy Siebold (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) followed up with a pair goals to give Dickinson a 4-3 lead, with 15:25 remaining in the half.
Jennifer Morrissey (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) and Elizabeth Sitko (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) assisted Siebold's goals and then scored back-to-back themselves, stretching the margin to 6-3.
Umbach broke up the run with an assist from Theiss at the 10:47 mark. Iverson scored the final goal of the half with 9:38 remaining, giving the Devils a 7-4 lead at the break.
Kelly Haglund (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart) opened the second half by placing a shot in the upper right corner to stretch the lead to 8-4. Muhlenberg answered at the 28:11 mark to reset the margin to three.
Sitko controlled the draw and drew a free position. She opted for a better angle as the Devils looked to work the ball, and some clock to protect the lead. Bush made a nice move on the right side, forcing a big save by Sara Allison.
Haglund would find net moments later, putting Dickinson up, 9-5, with a free position goal. Iverson tallied to stretch the margin to 10-5, and Sophie Waine (Wellesley, Mass./Greenwich) gained possession of the draw.
The Mules got control and went on a fast break but sophomore Molli Haimerl (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) had a great take-away to stall the attack. The Mules came back after a missed shot on the other end, and this time Umbach would finish, scoring off an assist from Casey Armstrong.
Caroline Clancy (Monkton, Md./Hereford) drew a foul and then shooting space, netting a free position at the 16:57 mark to extend the advantage to 11-6. Siebold won the draw and Dickinson went back on attack.
The Mules picked up a loose ground ball, but Haimerl made another strong defensive play. Moira Mahoney (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) came up with a big ground ball as well, as possession changed hands multiple times. Julia Primeau (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) claimed a ground ball and Muhlenberg received a yellow card on the clear to give the Devils a man-up advantage.
It was Umbach who would capitalize however, as she converted a free position. Sitko found a lane and buried a shot in the back of the net to answer at the 5:30 mark. Siebold made a strong play to win the ensuing draw control and critical possession with a 12-7 lead.
The Mules gained possession and drew a foul. Tara Cuddihy (Basking Ridge, N.J/Ridge) made a huge save and a made a nice clearing pass to Mahoney. The Devils rewarded the effort with another strike from Haglund, as she finished a feed from Sitko at the 2:09 mark.
Muhlenberg won the draw but turned the ball over on a warding call. The Devils cleared and went into four-corner mode. They ran off the remaining time for a key Centennial Conference win.
Haglund led the attack with a hat-trick while Haimerl led the way on defense, controlling seven ground balls. Mahoney and Siebold each controlled four draws while Sitko pulled three draws to go with two goals and two assists. Siebold struck twice as well with Bush finishing with a pair and Iverson scoring twice and handing out an assist.
JoJo Auerbach (Chevy Chase, Md./Bullis School) made four saves in the first half while Cuddihy finished with three after the break.
Umbach led Muhlenberg (8-6, 4-4) with five goals while Kiersten Mulvey made three saves and Allison stopped nine. The Red Devils improve to 8-6 and 4-4 in the Centennial Conference as well. They return home to face #1-ranked Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. Opening draw is set for 12:00 pm.
