(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's lacrosse team made a late run to put a scare into #2-ranked Franklin & Marshall on Saturday afternoon at Biddle Field. The Red Devils strung together five straight goals to cut an eight goal deficit to just three, with 2:31 remaining in the game. The Diplomats would hold on, netting three late goals for a final of 17-11.
The Red Devils kept the visitors in check in the early minutes. Grace Frank struck first, putting F&M on the board at the 23:58 mark. The Devils answered to pull even as Elizabeth Sitko (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) tallied, just over two minutes later.
The Diplomats erupted for seven straight goals, led by a hat-trick from senior Brittney Jorgenson to pull in front, 8-1. Despite the goal differential, the Red Devils were playing well on both ends of the field. Junior Katie Iverson (Marblehead, Mass./Pingree School) at the 11:19 mark.
Paige Moriarty finished an assist from Katie Groenke before Dickinson countered, scoring three straight of their own. Sophomore Maddy Siebold (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) struck at the 7:33 mark before Sitko tallied back-to-back goals with assists from Mara Cassidy (Silver Spring, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) and Jennifer Morrissey (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) to make the score, 9-5, with 4:34 remaining in the first half.
F&M tacked on a pair of goals in the final two minutes to hold an 11-5 advantage at the break. Megan Kelly scored to open the second as the Diplomats went on a 3-1 run. Sophie Waine (Wellesley, Mass./Greenwich) converted a free position before Gabby Frank struck twice to give the Diplomats a 14-6 lead, with 19:11 remaining in the game.
The Red Devils came alive, erupting for five straight goals, to cut the margin to 14-11. Iverson found the net on a back-to-back shots, with assists from Morrissey and Waine. Talene Bush (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) added a free position goal to make the score, 14-9, with 5:20 remaining in regulation.
Dickinson continued to roll as senior Kelly Haglund (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge School of the Holy Child) drove to the cage and pulled the Devils within four at the 3:52 mark. Sitko drew a free position and found twine with 2:31 on the clock.
The Diplomats gained control of the draw and looked to run out the clock. They would tally three final goals as the Devils looked to double-team and gain possession, for the final of 17-11.
Jorgenson finished with four goals and one assist while Moriarty tallied two goals and three assists to lead Franklin & Marshall (15-2, 8-1 CC). Danielle Harrington finished with 16 saves for the Diplomats.
Iverson and Sitko each recorded a hat-trick for the Red Devils, while Waine tallied two goals and one assist. Molli Haimerl (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) controlled three draws and turned in a solid performance on the defensive end.
JoJo Auerbach (Chevy Chase, Md./Bullis School) and Tara Cuddihy (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) both played outstanding in goal for the Red Devils. Auerbach made 14 saves in the first half before Cuddihy came on to stop eight attempts in the second.
The Red Devils finish the season 8-7 overall and 4-5 in the Centennial Conference.
