(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 setback to visiting Alvernia University, under the lights at Miller Memorial Field on Thursday night. The Red Devils went up, 1-0, in the first half but the Crusaders would answer with two in the second as they improve to 3-1-2 on the season.
The Red Devils put a goal in the board in the 10th minute, off a great build out of the midfield. Sophomore Matt Edmonds (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) broke into the attacking third and played a beautiful pass to the middle where classmate Chris Pollock (Salem, Va./North Cross) touched it into the area for senior Alfred Hylton-Dei (Geneva, Switzerland/Mercersburg Academy, Pa.) to drive a shot into the back of the net.
The match was fairly even throughout the first half with Dickinson holding stronger possessions but the Crusaders also had some quality chances, forcing some big saves from junior goaltender Jeremy Palcan (Park Ridge, Ill./St. Ignatius Prep).
Alvernia pulled even in the 55th minute as Rocky Elgogari tallied his first goal of the season. First-year Jay Ringer served a long ball into the penalty area and Elgogari redirected a header as Palcan came out for the challenge. The ball went over the top and into the net, tying the game, 1-1.
Ringer played a role in the second goal as well, touching a pass from Zach Weidner to Adam Orndorff, who made a nice far post run to net the game-winner with 14:42 remaining in the match.
The Red Devils created some strong chances in the final minutes but were unable to tally the equalizer.
Dickinson continued to hold possession in second half as well, but the Crusaders were able to make the most of their opportunities. The Devils held the edge in shots, 21-11, and had a 5-4 advantage in corners.
Sophomore Zach Rider made 11 saves on the night for Alvernia while Palcan finished with six.
The Red Devils slip to 3-2 overall. They open Centennial Conference play on Saturday night, hosting Washington College at 6:00 pm.
