Red Devils Rally to Win in Overtime 3-2

Box Score

(Carlisle, Pa.) –The Dickinson field hockey team had to work overtime but rallied from a two goal deficit to overtake visiting Bridgewater College, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon.

The match was well played by both teams as the early going saw the Red Devils dominate in time of possession and shots, while the Eagles held strong on the defensive end of the field.

Bridgewater capitalized on one of just three penalty corners in the first half as Rachael Loy redirected the ball into the cage after inserting the ball to Caroline Fletcher at the top of the circle. That goal came on the Eagles' first shot of the game at the 6:59 mark.

The Red Devils came out of halftime and continued to dominate the run of play but Bridgewater again held its ground in front of the cage. The visitors turned up the pressure, scoring again with just under 20 minutes remaining in regulation.

Junior Madison Clement found classmate Shannon Strosser at the top of the circle and she fired a shot into the upper left corner of the net for a 2-0 advantage.

The Red Devils never lost their composure and continued to press. Sophomore Amber Dey (Flemington, N.J./South Hunterdon) gave the Devils a breath of life, just 3:35 later, drawing a penalty stroke with 16:25 on the clock. She calmly put the ball in the back of the cage and the Devils on the board to cut the lead in half.

Dickinson pulled even with 4:47 to play as first-year Kayla Bendinelli (Princeton, N.J./Montgomery) served an assist to senior Caroline Karwel (Fairfax Station, Va./South County Secondary), just inside the top of the circle. Karwel capitalized on a crowd as she found room to put a shot past Hannah Rioux to knot the game, 2-2.

Rioux had been a brick wall all afternoon, turning away six shots in the first half and eight in the second.

Bridgewater forced a penalty corner as time expired but senior goaltender Emily Fuss (Newtown Square, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) came up with a huge save to send the game to overtime.

Dickinson completed the comeback, just 4:08 into the first extra frame. Karwel inserted a penalty corner to junior Merritt Davis (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest) who put the ball on the stick of classmate Catherine Perlmutter (Blue Bell, Pa./Germantown Academy) for a shot off the pads of Rioux and into the cage for the game-winner.

The Red Devils outshot the Eagles 32-5 on the day and held a 21-5 advantage in penalty corners. Rioux finished with 14 saves in an outstanding effort by the first-year goaltender. Fuss finished with three saves as they all became critical in her return to the line-up on Saturday.

The Red Devils improve to 2-0 on the season. They are home again on Wednesday, hosting Susquehanna University at 4:00 pm.
