Unbeaten Mules Slip Past Devils 3-2

Box Score

(Allentown, Pa.) – The Dickinson field hockey team suffered its first loss in six outings as #18-ranked Muhlenberg College slipped past the Red Devils 3-2 on Saturday afternoon. The Mules remained unbeaten, improving to 9-0 overall and 4-0 in the Centennial Conference.

The Mules jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half, putting a goal on the board in the 24th minute. Taylor Smith redirected a shot off the stick of Emily Boyle for a 1-0 lead. Emily Davis tallied an assist as Alexandra DeAngelo stretched the lead to 2-0, with just over five minutes to play in the first half.

The Red Devils answered 59 seconds later to cut the margin in half. Junior Kim Monteferante (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Lakeland) redirected an assist from classmate Amber Dey (Flemington, N.J./South Hunterdon) as the Devils capitalized on a penalty corner.

The Mules struck again, almost immediately after the break as Rachel Strow found the cage on a cross from Laura Holdman, just 52 seconds into the second half.

The Red Devils looked to rally, putting another goal on the board with 16 minutes remaining in regulation. Sophomore Chelsea Kramer (New Vernon, N.J./Morristown Beard) reached double-figures with her 10th goal of the season, converting on a cross from senior Catherine Perlmutter (Blue Bell, Pa./Germantown Academy) to make the score, 3-2.

The Red Devils created some scoring opportunities down the stretch, but Muhlenberg goalkeeper Emma Rosenthal made a pair of big saves to help secure the win.

The Mules looked to build on their lead but junior goalkeeper Freddie Bancroft (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) turned away four shots in the final six minutes to keep the Devils in striking distance.

The hosts outshot the Devils 19-9, but held just a 6-4 advantage in the second half. Muhlenberg forced seven penalty corners with the Devils creating three on the day.

Rosenthal finished with five saves while Bancroft made 15 stops in the game. The Red Devils slip to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference. They are on the road again on Wednesday, traveling to McDaniel College for a 4:30 start.
