#6 Bears Fend Off Devils in CC Semifinal

(Collegeville, Pa.) – The Dickinson field hockey team gave all #6-ranked Ursinus College could handle on Saturday in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference playoffs. The Bears tallied three, second-half goals to post a 5-2 decision, but none came easy as the Red Devils turned in a solid effort.

The Bears struck first as Amber Steigerwalt tipped in a saved rebound, six minutes into the match for a 1-0 lead.

Junior Taylor Bednar (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) countered for the Red Devils, finishing an assist from classmate Danielle Schwab (Highland, Md./River Hill), with just under 24 minutes to play in the half.

Less than four minutes later the Red Devils would take the lead as first-year Delaney Ahn (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus), tapped a shot inside the far post on a cross from senior Catherine Perlmutter (Blue Bell, Pa./Germantown Academy), with 20:10 remaining in the half.

The Bears would capitalize on a penalty corner to tie the game with 12:53 on the clock. Steigerwalt finished an assist from Ann Kopera to pull Ursinus even, 2-2.

Ursinus came out firing to open the second half as first-year goalkeeper Heather Meeder (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) turned away back-to-back shots and the Red Devil defense blocked two more attempts in the early minutes.

The Red Devils were flagged with a yellow card and the Bears took advantage of the extra-man opportunity, scoring twice in a span of just over a minute to quickly lead, 4-2. Colleen Leahy scored off an assist from Erin Saybolt with 28:47 remaining and Brooke Overly intercepted a pass and tallied at the 27:32 mark.

Meeder turned away another shot by Steigerwalt and junior Chelsea Kramer (New Vernon, N.J./Morristown Beard) saw back-to-back shots go just wide of the cage.

Meeder turned away three more shots before the Bears capitalized on another penalty corner with Kopera finding the cage off an assist from Aliki Torrence with 1:26 to play in the game.

Meeder finished with 11 saves while junior Kim Monteferante (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Lakeland) added a defensive save.

The Red Devils outshot the Bears in the first half, 13-12, but managed just a pair after the break as Ursinus finished with a 23-15 advantage. The Devils held their own on corners, forcing nine while allowing 12 on the defensive end.

Jules Singer made a pair of saves as the #6-ranked Bears improve to 15-4 on the season. The Red Devils finish at 12-7. Ursinus advances to the championship to face #7-ranked Franklin & Marshall on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
