(Middletown, Conn.) – The Dickinson women's squash team, ranked 25th in the latest College Squash Association poll, avenged last season's loss at nationals with a 7-2 win over #24 Wesleyan University in its first match on Sunday morning. The Devils fell to #16 Bates College in the second half of the double-header, 8-1.
The Red Devils turned in some dominant wins in the opener, claiming five flights, 3-0. Domenica Romo (Ambato, Ecuador/Colegio Atenas) held on in a marathon second for an (11-8, 17-15, 11-7) win in the second spot.
Nicole DeLuca (Newtown Square, Pa./Baldwin School) held on in a tough, 16-14 first set, and closed out with 11-3 and 11-6 scores in the number four flight.
Bates gave the Devils a strong challenge in the second match. Sophomore Abbie Wingerd (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) claimed the lone point with a 3-0 victory in the nine spot. Classmate Hedvika Suchankova (Olomouc, Czech Republic/St. Michael's) split sets in the top flight before dropping a 3-2 decision (11-8, 4-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-5).
The Red Devils move to 3-4 on the season. They return to action on January 14th, joining Middlebury College at Franklin & Marshall for a tri-match at 2:00 pm.
