Box Score (Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's soccer team came out on top of a hard fought Centennial Conference match with visiting Ursinus, scoring a pair of late goals to post a 2-0 victory at Miller Memorial Field on Saturday.
The Red Devils were already fighting an uphill battle, receiving a red card in the 38th minute of the contest and playing man-down for the remainder of the match.
Dickinson held its own and was able to create some strong scoring chances, despite the extra-man advantage of Ursinus. Senior goalkeeper Jeremy Palcan (Park Ridge, Ill./St. Ignatius Prep) made some great saves all afternoon and especially in the second half.
The Red Devils would finally break through as first-year Brendan McGovern (Burlington, Vt./Kimball Union Academy, N.H.) made a nice move in the penalty area and sent a beautiful feed to the back post for senior Ian McManness (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield), who ripped the ball into the back of the net with 6:22 remaining in regulation.
The Red Devils kept the pressure on and would tally an insurance goal in the 88th minute. McManness played a key role again, forcing a loose ball at the top of the 18 that Will Bracken (Easton, Conn./Joel Barlow) collected and put away for give Dickinson a 2-0 advantage.
The Red Devils held strong over the final two minutes to claim a key Centennial Conference decision, improving to 3-4-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Dickinson held a 16-13 advantage in shots while Ursinus produced six corners while allowing just two. Vince Maiorino made eight saves for the Bears as they fall to 3-4 and 0-2 in the CC. Palcan recorded seven saves to earn the shutout.
The Red Devils are home again on Wednesday, hosting McDaniel College at 6:00 pm.
