Box Score (Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team suffered a tough, one-point setback to visiting Ursinus College as the Bears held on for a 52-51 decision at the Kline Center on Thursday night.
First-year Hannah Heiring (Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata) and senior Helen Roberts (Oakton, Va./Oakton) opened the game with three-pointers as the teams played to a 10-10 tie, with just under three minutes to play in the first quarter.
Ursinus built a five-point lead before Mairead Donahue (Trumbull, Conn./St. Joseph) and Lauren McBride (Trenton, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's) scored for the Devils to cut the deficit to one at the end of the first.
The Bears stretched the margin to double-figures in the second quarter. Seniors Mary Martin (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) and Jennifer Smith (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) tallied in the final 30 seconds to make the score, 30-24, at halftime.
The Red Devils outscored the Bears, 14-10 in the third to trail by a field-goal as they headed into the final quarter of play. Martin converted a three-point play and finished an assist from Heiring to tie the game, 30-30, with 6:09 remaining in the third.
Martin continued to battled, twice putting the Devils up in the period. Paulina Boyer closed out the third with a three-pointer to give the visitors a 40-38 advantage.
Rachel Guy started out the fourth quarter with a three-pointer before lay-ups from Kassidy Lesher (Shoemakersville, Pa./Hamburg) and Martin cut the lead to one.
Ursinus moved back in front by seven at the 6:28 mark, but the Red Devils still had one last run left. Lesher hit two free throws with Roberts and Martin countering a free throw with back-to-back jumpers from the foul line.
Smith came away with a huge defensive rebound and Heiring buried a three-pointer off an assist from Martin to put Dickinson on top, 51-50, with 1:16 left to play.
Guy made a strong move to basket, scoring with just 11 seconds on the clock, putting Ursinus back in front. Lydia Konstanzer came up with a steal for Ursinus and the Bears held on for the win, 52-51.
Konstanzer led the Bears (7-7, 5-4) with a game-high 22 points, adding eight rebounds while Toni Suler grabbed eight rebounds and blocked six shots on the night.
Martin finished with a team-high 20 points for the Red Devils, hitting 8-of-9 free throws to go with five rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals.
Lesher tallied eight points and a game-high nine rebounds, adding a pair of blocked shots. Heiring recorded eight points and six rebounds, and Smith made five steals, scoring four.
The Red Devils slip to 9-4 overall and 6-2 in the Centennial Conference. They are on the road this weekend, traveling to Washington College for a 4:00 pm tip-off on Saturday.
