Box Score (Baltimore, Md.) – The Dickinson women's lacrosse team matched-up against its second straight top-20 opponent on Saturday, meeting #18-ranked St. Mary's College of Maryland at the Roland Park Country School in Baltimore.
The Seahawks used a 4-0 run to lead 5-1 at halftime and held on in a defensive struggle for a 7-5 victory to start the season at 3-0.
St. Mary's struck first as Erika Kopf found the net, just over five minutes into the contest. The Red Devils pulled even as sophomore Anne Dunster (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich) converted a free position goal at the 22:31 mark.
The Seahawks answered, just 25 seconds later to regain the lead. The Red Devil defense held for almost 10 minutes before Kopf assisted Meg Gesner to give St. Mary's a 3-1 advantage with 12:50 to play in the first half.
Junior Lacey Brown tallied a pair of free position goals to close out the half with the Seahawks in front, 5-1.
The Red Devils came out of the break on fire, scoring three straight goals in the opening eight minutes to cut the deficit to just one.
Senior Allison Carey (Weston, Conn./Laurelton Hall) dished out an assist to sophomore Eleanor Kaestner (Glyndon, Md./Franklin) and finished a feed from first-year Ashley Conner (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) to make the score, 5-3, with 22:36 remaining in the game.
Senior Maddy Siebold (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) pulled the Red Devils within one, 30 seconds later, scoring off an assist from junior Katie Barton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Country Day).
Kopf tallied a free position goal with 18:40 left to play and senior Sophie Waine (Wellesley, Mass./Greenwich) found the net on an eight-meter shot, less than a minute later to keep the Devils within one, 6-5.
Brown closed out the scoring at the 15:24 mark with an assist from Gesner for the final of 7-5.
The Red Devils remained on the attack as they looked to pull even. They held the Seahawks to just two shots in the final 15 minutes while producing six on the offensive end of the field. Sophomore goaltender Emma Brown was solid in the nets, however, turning away all six shots, including five free position attempts.
Lacey Brown led the Seahawks with a hat-trick while Emma Brown finished with 10 saves as they improve to 3-0 on the season.
Carey led the Red Devil attack with a goal and an assist while Siebold caused three turnovers. Senior Tara Cuddihy (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) matched Brown with 10 saves in goal for the Red Devils, adding five ground balls and a caused turnover.
The Red Devils slip to 0-2 on the year, facing the #10 and #18-ranked teams in the nation to start the season. They travel to the University of Mount Union for a 12:00 pm start next Saturday.
