Box Score (Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's lacrosse team opened Centennial Conference play with a thrilling overtime win over visiting Washington College on Saturday afternoon at Biddle Field.
The Red Devils scored in the first overtime as sophomore Anne Dunster (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich) collected a rebound and scored to lead Dickinson to an 11-10 victory.
Washington came out strong, scoring at the 24:28 mark before first-year Ashley Conner (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) countered with a free position goal to tie the game.
Cecily Docktor scored and handed out an assist in a 3-1 run as Washington took a 4-2 lead with 10:24 remaining in the half. Sophomore Eleanor Kaestner (Glyndon, Md./Franklin) added a goal for the Devils, finishing an assist from Allison Carey (Weston, Conn./Laurelton Hall).
The Red Devils scored back-to-back goals to pull even at halftime. Sophomore Sam Marmo (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) found the net at the 9:39 mark and senior Sophie Waine (Wellesley, Mass./Greenwich) converted a free position to knot the game, 4-4.
The Red Devils took the upper hand after the break with goals from Maddy Siebold (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) and Kaestner in the first 1:10 of the second half.
Washington countered at the 21:14 mark but Dickinson would answer with a 4-0 run to lead 10-5, with 15:58 remaining.
Kaestner and Marmo netted goals in a span of under two minutes before Kaestner added two more with assists from Dunster for the five-goal advantage.
The Shorewomen weren't quite ready to concede however, scoring five straight to send the game into overtime. Docktor started the run and Katherine Vincent converted a pair of free positions, the second with just six seconds left to play.
The Red Devils controlled the critical opening draw of overtime and Siebold drew a free position shot. Madeline Mullen came up with the save but Dunster was right there to grab the rebound and finish with the game-winner.
Kaestner led the way on offense, scoring five goals on seven shots. Marmo struck twice while Siebold added four draws. Senior Molli Haimerl (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) caused three turnovers while Tara Cassidy (Glen Rock, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) controlled three draws.
Senior goaltender Tara Cuddihy (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge), last week's Fast Break/IWLCA National Defensive Player of the Week, came away with 11 saves, three caused turnovers and three ground balls on the day.
The Red Devils improve to 4-4 on the season and 1-0 in the conference. They travel to Bryn Mawr College next Saturday for a 1:00 pm opening draw.
