Volleyball Opens With 3-1 Start in Puerto Rico

(San Juan, Puerto Rico) – The Dickinson women's volleyball team enjoyed its time in Puerto Rico, opening the 2017 season with back-to-back wins on Saturday. They added another on Sunday to finish 3-1 at the Puerto Rico Classico.

The Red Devils posted a pair of 3-0 victories on Saturday, turning back Lasell (25-14, 25-21, 25-16) and topping Wesley College (25-19, 25-20, 25-18). They fell to Simpson in an early battle on Sunday, 3-0 (26-24, 25-18, 25-18), but bounced back to sweep Widener, 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-15, to close out the weekend.

First-year Jamie Singer (Livingston, N.J./Golda Och) had a great start, leading the Red Devils with 11 kills, seven digs and four blocks in the Lasell match. Lauren Beecher (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) added six kills and tallied four blocks.

First-year Tatiana Lopez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Puertorriqueno de Ninas) had a great showing in front of her hometown crowd, recording 24 digs in her first collegiate match.

Singer reached double-figures in the Wesley match as well, recording 10 kills to go with seven digs. Jordyn Park (Great Falls, Va./Flint Hill) had seven kills while Park and Beecher each tallied five. Park had two solo blocks and three assists while Allgaier finished with 23 assists and eight digs.

Banker picked up 14 digs and Lopez came away with 10.

Despite the loss, the Red Devils battled with Simpson, forcing the first set to 26-24. Park was solid at the net on Sunday, leading the attack against Simpson with eight kills while adding six more blocks to her season total. Bongo had six kills with Beecher and Singer each scoring with five. Alex Berezan (Surrey, B.C./Earl Marriott Secondary) tallied seven, adding three blocks

Bongo reached double-figures with a team-high 10 kills in the final match with Park adding nine and Beecher chipping in with eight. Singer put down seven kills and had seven digs.

Allgaier dished out 16 assists in the opener and added 28 against Widener. Lopez led the Devils with 18 and 16 digs, respectively, on Sunday.

The Red Devils travel to the Rowan Invitational next weekend. They face Keystone and Rowan on Friday night before going up against Gettysburg and Widener on Saturday.
