Box Score (Baltimore, Md.) – The Dickinson volleyball team had a tall order Thursday night, traveling to 12th-ranked Johns Hopkins to face the unbeaten Blue Jays. Hopkins would improve to a school record 18-0 on the season with a 3-0 win, but not as easily as they would have liked.
The Red Devils snapped the Blue Jays' unbeaten streak in 2018, knocking off Hopkins, 3-1, at the Kline Center.
The Blue Jays had a strong start in the opening set, serving up a pair of aces in an 8-3 run.
Dickinson managed to put string together some quality play on their side of the net, but Hopkins stretched the margin to 16-7. That forced a Red Devil timeout before the hosts closed out the set 25-11, behind seven kills and four aces.
Hanna Riley (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown) put back a nice block early in the second set and big kills from Jamie Singer (Livingston, N.J./Golda Och) and Morgan Biggs (Stephenson, Va./James Wood) gave the Red Devils a 7-5 advantage.
Biggs found a groove and Riley joined Kylie Albertsen (Woodstock, Md./Marriots Ridge) for a big block to keep the set even at 13-13. Emma Lange (Jupiter, Fla./Benjamin) got hot and led Dickinson to a stalemate at 18-18.
The Red Devils wouldn't let Hopkins pull away, but the Blue Jays held on to take a 2-0 lead with a 25-22 decision.
Albertsen had a big kill to start another back-and-forth set in the third before Hopkins put together run to take an 8-4 lead. The Blue Jays started to click and closed out the third set with a big run, 25-11.
Biggs led the way at the net with seven kills while Lange finished with six on the night.
Kristin Allgaier (Reston, Va./South Lakes) handed out 19 assists and picked up five digs. Junior libero Tatiana Lopez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Colegio Puertorriqueno de Ninas) tallied a team-high nine digs.
Christina Chu (Hartsdale, N.Y./Ardsley) and Jacqueline Banker (Rockaway Park, N.Y./Archbishop Malloy) picked up seven and five digs, respectively.
The Red Devils move to 10-7 overall and 2-3 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to face Washington College on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
