Box Score (Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's basketball team used a balanced offensive attack and had strong contributions from all over the floor on Wednesday night, holding off visiting McDaniel College, 61-54.
McDaniel took the early advantage and held an 18-14 lead at the end of the first quarter behind a pair of three-pointers from Natalie Mehl.
Junior Claudia Maira (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) knocked down a three-pointer to start the second quarter and first-year Maura Leverone (Herndon, Va./Bishop O'Connell) made a free throw and drove to the basket to put the Red Devils up, 20-19, at the 7:06 mark.
Mehl answered with another three-pointer and the teams would trade field-goals for the remainder of the period with Dickinson holding a slim 29-27 edge at halftime.
First-year Kate Montgomery (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) had a big third quarter for the Red Devils and Leverone finished a fast break at the end to give Dickinson its biggest lead of the night at 48-35.
Halle Maeda (Santa Monica, Calif./Mira Costa) hit a triple to give the Red Devils a 14-point advantage and senior Emily Padalino (West Sand Lake, N.Y./Albany Academy) sank a pair of free throws to put the Devils up by 14 again at the 3:33 mark.
Mehl countered for McDaniel with three free throws and the Green Terror went on an 8-0 run to cut the margin to just five with 1:34 remaining in the game.
Leverone converted a pair of big free throws with 19 seconds left for the final of 61-54. She led the Red Devils with 13 points on the night, adding three assists and a pair of steals.
Padalino came away with a double-double, scoring 12 points and controlling 10 rebounds. Montgomery tallied eight points and nine rebounds while Maira added eight points, four rebounds and three assists.
Maeda and sophomore Hannah Peck (Baldwin, N.Y./Sacred Heart) each scored seven and Hannah Heiring (Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata) tallied six points, five rebounds and three steals.
The Red Devils improve to 2-4 overall and 2-1 in the Centennial Conference. They are home again on Saturday, hosting Haverford College at 2:00 pm.
