Field Hockey Works Overtime to Win CC Opener

Box Score

(Swarthmore, Pa.) – The Dickinson field hockey team worked overtime to claim the Centennial Conference opener, 2-1, at Swarthmore College on Saturday.

The women's soccer team scored with just two minutes remaining in the second overtime, but the field hockey team went another direction, netting the game-winner just 2:04 into the extra-frame.

The teams traded goals in a span of just three minutes in the second quarter to make the score, 1-1, at halftime.

Junior Maddie Dombroski (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) finished an assist from Hannah Spiri (Morgantown, Pa./Twin Valley) with 4:28 remaining in the half.

Chelsea Semper answered for the Garnet with 1:33 on the clock to pull Swarthmore back even.

Swarthmore held a slim edge in shots in the first half, 7-6, while the Red Devils managed the only three shots in the third period. The teams would trade a pair of shots in the fourth but could not find the back of the cage.

Dombroski made a nice move across the top of the circle and dropped a shot pass to the stick of Marie Laverdiere (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) who blasted a drive from just inside the circle to give Dickinson the win.

Heather Meeder (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) made three saves for the Red Devils while Aron Lankford made four stops for Swarthmore.

The Red Devils improve to 4-2 overall and start conference play at 1-0. They return home to face Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
