Devils Drop Non-Conference Finale to Eagles

Box Score

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Dickinson field hockey team fell behind 2-0 inside the first seven minutes of the game, and were never able to get all the way back as Sierra Bobb netted the Devils lone marker in a 3-1 non-conference loss at Mary Washington on Wednesday afternoon.

Mary Washington came out of the gates firing as they had four shots inside the opening four minutes of the game. Devils keeper Saige Stevens made consecutive stops on Paige Stewart before Riley Tengwall slipped an effort by her for the 1-0 edge with 3:39 gone. Dickinson came back down the pitch two minutes later and tried to tie the game, unfortunately, both of Abby Marthins chances were swept off the line by Zoe Hammond. The Eagles would take advantage of the momentum at the 6:26 mark as Emma Bernard deflected a shot from Sydney Keating into the cage to make it 2-0 after one.

Eagles netminder Chloe Billy would be tested early in the second by Bobb and Marthins, but was up to the task on both. Ellie Werner had an opportunity with 6:54 gone, unfortunately, the ball rolled wide of the target. Lauren Boucher fired the final shot of the half in the 27th-minute which Stevens calmly kicked to the side preserving the 2-0 scoreline at the break.

Olivia Renault took over between the pipes for the Devils to start the third quarter and was called upon right away denying Maggie Ellis, Boucher, and Tengwall within the first five minutes. Dickinson then got the offense heading towards the Eagles goal as Bobb was turned away by Billy, before finishing off her own rebound to cut the deficit to 2-1 exactly six minutes in. Mary Washington got the goal right back 61-seconds later when Tengwall tapped in a rebound from a Renault save for a 3-1 advantage. DC tried to get within one heading to the fourth, but Hannah Spiri was stopped by Billy and Sydney Engler shot wide to keep it 3-1.

Dickinson would be held shotless over the final 15 minutes, while Renault would be tasked with making four more saves to result in the 3-1 final score.
