CARLISLE, Pa. -
Maggie Carson netted her first collegiate goal and recorded her first game-winner on Saturday afternoon as the Red Devils came from behind to knock off Ursinus College 2-1 in overtime at the Biddle Field Complex.
The Devils were on the attack right out of the blocks as
Morgan Yandow-Harding had a penalty stroke saved by Bears keeper Jordan Ulsh inside the opening minute. The Red and White continued to keep up the pressure with shots from
Malena Malka Goldman,
Abby Marthins, and Yandow-Harding all being turned away by Ulsh with less than four minutes off the clock. Ursinus then found their footing in the sixth-minute when Addie Plummer was stopped by
Saige Stevens, before the DC goalie was called upon again a minute later by Ellie Bruggeman. Each side would have one more shot in the period with
Katie Marthins and Mary Lauren Franz both having their chances snuffed out by the defense ending the first.
An early green card against Dickinson in the second led to the first marker of the contest as Laura Rothschild played in a penalty corner to Lauren Weaver who had her shot blocked, but the ball squirted out to Bruggeman for the finish. A. Marthins and Plummer each recorded a shot for their respective sides, unfortunately, neither of them reached the cage. Stevens would prevent Bruggeman from notching her second of the game with a strong save, which led to
Becca Woods forcing a stop from Ulsh in the 27th. Two minutes later the Devils were on level terms heading into the half when
Ella Krenzer buried a nice feed from
Sammi Moonay.
It was Stevens who had to come up big with just 15-seconds gone in the third as a foul in the attack area led to an Ursinus penalty stroke. The keeper stared down Bruggeman and knocked the stroke away to keep the score at 1-1. Seven minutes later Yandow-Harding called on Ulsh to make a save, before three minutes later the Devils goalie had to prevent a marker by Regan Horting to send the game to the fourth still locked at 1-1.
The visitors had the opening two chances of the frame, but neither one got on target. Goldman would let a shot fly at cage during the 51st-minute, however, it went wide of the mark. Two minutes after that Jordan Moore and Horting were both shutdown by Stevens to hold the score where it was. Ursinus had one more opportunity with five minutes remaining as Franz worked herself free, fortunately for Dickinson Stevens was there to make the stop. With just under two minutes to play A. Marthins had an offering sail wide of Ulsh to force overtime.
The Bears had the first two shots of the extra session with Moore sending a shot wide, while Stevens denied Franz in the fourth minute. Dickinson found the winner with 5:50 off the clock as Carson had her initial attempt stopped by Ulsh, but the rebound kicked right back out to her for the finish.
