GETTYSBURG, Pa. -
Abby Marthins recorded a hat trick to help lead the Dickinson field hockey team past the host Gettysburg College to earn their second straight win with a 5-2 Centennial Conference victory on Wednesday afternoon at Musselman Stadium.
The Red and White were out of the blocks quick as it took just 3:26 for Marthins to dribble the ball down the left wing and fire a shot beyond the reach of Emilia Saccento for the 1-0 edge. Five minutes later the hosts would notch their first shot, but the offering by Olivia Palermo rolled wide of
Saige Stevens in cage. After an attempt from
Ella Krenzer was stopped by Saccento the Red and White would concede a penalty stroke to the Bullets. Jenna Vadinsky stepped up to the spot and beat the goalie to level the score going to the second.
Gettysburg grabbed the lead 92-seconds into the second when Sam Woolery stepped into a big shot from the top of the area that was tipped in by Hailey Rhine to make it 2-1. The Devils had the next look at goal as Marthins was denied by Saccento in the 19th-minute, before the keeper knocked the ball into her own net with 24:21 off the clock to bring the Red and White level going into the break.
With two minutes gone in the third Vadinsky tried to put the Bullets back in front, however, Stevens was there to make the save. Dickinson eventually reclaimed the lead for good at the 5:32 mark as Marthins played in a corner to
Anna Snyder who setup
Morgan Yandow-Harding for the shot that she rocketed past new Gettysburg keeper Audrey Ross. Marthins had another look at frame during the 43rd, but missed the mark leaving it at 3-2 heading to the fourth.
The home side went in search of the equalizer just over a minute in when Rhine was turned away by Stevens. After a Gettysburg corner amounted to no shots, the Devils forced a pair of stops out of Ross as she shutdown both Krenzer and Marthins. However, the Red and White would not be denied any more hitting the back of the net with their next two chances both thanks to Marthins extending the margin to 5-2.
Maggie Carson and Rhine each recorded one more shot for their respective sides, but did not beat either keeper.
