Devils Sail Past Shorewomen to the Postseason

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - For the first time since 2008 the Dickinson women's volleyball team will have their season extend beyond the last day of the regular season as the Red Devils grabbed a 3-1 road win over Washington College on Saturday afternoon.

The two sides shared the opening ten points of the match with Emma Lange and Emma Popham recording kills for the Devils. After a score by Lange the teams traded 4-0 runs with points by Sophia Denayer and Camille Dofiles helping to leave DC on top 10-9. An even split of the ensuing eight points made it 14-13 visitors, before Sylvia Johnson, Logan Kenny, Brooklynn Pugner, and Angelina Schaber organized a 9-4 charge to open up a 23-18 edge. An ace for Cassidy Davis and kill by Popham cut it to 23-20, but points by Courtney Maxwell, Johnson, and Kenny closed the first 25-20.

Dickinson came out flying to begin the second with Amelia Kim, Avery Lewis, Jordan Schucker, Davis, Lange, and Popham each recording kills to make it 14-6 DC. Consecutive kills by Kenny trimmed it to 14-8, prior to scores from Kim and Popham opening the margin back out to 20-9. Kim, Lange, Lewis, and Popham finished off the set at 25-14.

Things were nip-and-tuck to kickoff the third as kills by Dessie Anne Nietert, Davis, Denayer, Dofiles, and Lange had the score deadlocked at 9-9. A 4-1 Shorewomen response on scores by Johnson and Schaber gave the hosts a 13-10 advantage. However, Dickinson had a quick answer as aces by Ann Marie Patterson and Lewis along with kills from Kim, Lange, and Popham led to a 7-2 run making it 17-15. A 5-2 sprint for Washington gave the hosts a slim 19-18 edge, but two kills each by Nietert and Popham as well as a score for Kim gave DC a 25-22 win.

It was the home side that was out of the blocks past during the fourth as Victoria Kile, Johnson, Maxwell, and Schaber giving them a 7-2 lead. Once again though DC had an answer with Denayer, Lange, Nietert, and Schucker leading a 10-2 sprint making it 12-9 Devils. The two teams traded the following eight points to leave the score at 16-13. Dickinson then ripped off five in a row thanks to Kim, Lange, Patterson, and Popham to take a 21-13 advantage. Lindsay Saddic, Maxwell, and Pugner would not let the Shorewomen go down quietly as they closed to within 24-18, prior to Lange pounding down the match winning kill at 25-18.
