Early Leads for Devils Not Enough in CC First Round

CARLISLE, Pa. - The fourth-seeded Dickinson volleyball making their first appearance in the Centennial Conference postseason since 2008 jumped out to early leads in each set. However, the Red and White were unable to hold onto those advantages against the visiting fifth-seeded Gettysburg College as the Bullets rallied back for a 3-0 win on Wednesday night at the Kline Center.

The Devils were rolling early in front of the huge "white-clad" crowd as they jumped out to a 7-2 lead thanks to kills from Alexa Barowski, Cassidy Davis, and Amelia Kim. A 6-2 response by the visitors ended on an ace by Sophie Nasir to close within 9-8. Once again the home side put together a run with Barowski recording the lone kill during a 5-1 push to extend the margin to 14-9. After three straight for the guests a service miscue by Mary Huegel followed by an ace for Barowski made it 16-12. Unfortunately after that it was all Bullets as Kim notched the only two home kills during a 13-4 rampage to take the first 25-20.

To kickoff the second Dickinson was on the front-foot again with block by Sophia Denayer and Emma Lange giving DC a 4-1 advantage. Gettysburg answered with kills from Olivia Biggs and Kendall Erpenbeck to pull level at 4-4. The two sides split the next ten points to keep the score even 9-9 with scores coming off the hands of Barowski and Lange. However, it was the Bullets who would break things open with a 13-2 charge aided by kills for Alycen Radolovic, Kylie Ulrich, Biggs, Erpenbeck, and Huegel to take command of the game 22-11. The Devils continued to fight with Camille Dofiles putting away an ace, while Emma Popham and Lange chipping in kills to cut the deficit to 24-16. Zanze Kuba-McCoy tallied the final point on the next play for the 25-16 win.

Points by Grace Coccagna, Barowski, Lange, and Popham had the home team out to a 5-3 advantage to start the third. The Bullets put together a 5-3 stretch of their own to draw even at 8-8 on an ace by Chelsea O'Leary. A kill for Denayer and a visiting miscue made it 10-8, before Kuba-McCoy scored twice (10-10). After that things went back-and-forth as the two sides traded the ensuing 14 points with Devil kills coming from Jordan Schucker, Barowski, Denayer, Kim, Lange, and Popham to hold the score in a deadlock 17-17. Kills by Huegel, Kuba-McCoy, Radolovic, and Ulrich aided a 7-1 visitors run to move a point away from the match (24-18). Three consecutive Bullet mistakes gave DC life at 24-21, but Radolovic pounded down the final kill (25-21).
