Devils Fall Short Against McDaniel at Home

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson field hockey team scored less than two minutes into the game, but were unable to hold on against the visiting McDaniel College as the Green Terror escaped the Biddle Field Complex with a 2-1 Centennial Conference win on Tuesday afternoon.

The Red and White were on the attack early as Becca Woods was stopped once by visiting keeper Mikayla Smith, before pounding home a feed from Abby Marthins off a penalty corner for a 1-0 lead at the 1:41 mark. It would take until the sixth minute for McDaniel to record a shot when Saige Stevens bested Amanda Sponaugle. With 58-seconds remaining in the first the guests were on level terms as Yeseniah Ortiz carried the ball past a defender and slipped a shot beyond the reach of Stevens to knot the score. Dickinson got one last attempt before the horn, but Malena Malka Goldman was blocked by the Terror defense.

Ten minutes into the second the Devils appeared to be well on the verge of taking the lead when Maggie Carson, Katie Marthins, and Emma Snyder all recorded shots within 26-seconds of each other. However, the McDaniel goalie batted away each attempt. Smith would be tasked with making one more save in the period when she turned aside Woods at the 12:56 mark. Then, with just over a minute remaining the Devils recorded their fifth shot of the frame, but the offering from Morgan Yandow-Harding was knocked down by the defense.

The third quarter was played almost exclusively in the midfield as there was only one shot taken during the 15-minute segment when Sponaugle had her shot smacked away by Stevens with 5:03 off the clock.

In the fourth it took just over eight minutes for the away side to grab the lead when Emma Legacy inserted a corner to Sponaugle who ripped a shot from the left-side past Stevens for the 2-1 edge. Off the ensuing restart the Devils worked the ball right inside the attacking area and earned a corner. A. Marthins played the ball into Carson who let a shot fly at Smith that actually slipped behind the keeper. However, Sponaugle was there to sweep the ball off the goaline preventing the Red and White from knotting the score. Two minutes later Dickinson had another chance at cage, but Yandow-Harding was stopped by Smith before Woods sailed an offering off the mark. The Devils had one final opportunity with 12-seconds to play when a corner from A. Marthins found the stick of Woods who unfortunately had her shot go just to the outside of the post to allow McDaniel to leave with the one-goal win.
