Devils Begin Post-Holiday Slate by Dropping Non-Conference Contest to Ducks

HOBOKEN, N.J. - The Dickinson men's basketball team began their post-holiday break slate on Thursday afternoon with a 65-49 non-conference loss to the host Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks at Canavan Arena on day one of the Stevens Holiday Tournament.

Martin Mann gave the Devils the lead at the 1:28 mark, but then baskets from Mike Goodall and Matt Leming coupled with two at the stripe for Jack Spellman led to a 7-2 edge for the home side with 15:41 to play. A pair of jumpers for Isaiah Edmond and a triple by Brandon Wiercinski capped a 7-2 DC charge to draw even at 9-9 with 7:31 off the clock. Stevens then opened things back up as treys by Brandon Coughlan and Leming along with layups from Goodall and Spellman made it 21-9 home team as the game past the 14-minute mark. The Devs scored the next five points thanks to Anthony Goeb and Mann, but then Goodall and Spellman answered back to extend the margin to 29-14 with 3:01 remaining. Another three-ball by Wiercinski, followed by scores from Randy Shephard and Edmond cut the deficit down to 32-21 at the break.

The third triple of the day for Wiercinski and a layup from Mann pulled the Red and White to within 36-26 at the two minute mark. However, the Ducks had the immediate response scoring seven in a row through Brett Bischoping, Jack Liedtka, and Spellman to push the margin out to 43-26 with five minutes elapsed. Baskets by Aaron Bailey and Shephard were not enough to put much of a dent into the deficit over the next couple of minutes as the Red and White still trailed 47-31. Dickinson got triples out of the hands of Shephard and Wiercinski, but a pair of buckets from Coughlan kept Stevens ahead 55-37 with seven minutes to go. B.J. McNeil and Edmond hit from deep and Goeb finished at the rim to give DC some momentum at 59-45, unfortunately, Goodall and Leming each buried a three to make it the largest lead of the day at 65-45 at the 17:52 mark. A McNeil trey and a foul shot for Bailey capped the scoring for the day at 65-49.
