Devils Head Into 2023 With a Victory

HOBOKEN, N.J. - The Dickinson men's basketball team put four players in double-figures led by 17 from graduate student Martin Mann to slip past the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons by a score of 80-78 in the consolation game of the Stevens Holiday Tournament at Canavan Arena.

The Dragons were out of the gates fast Daniel Derice netting five points during a 7-0 run over the opening three minutes. Mann supplied the Devils first bucket of the day at the 4:17 mark, followed by five from Anthony Goeb and a foul shot for Drew Haueisen to bring DC level 8-8 with five minutes gone. Oneonta responded with an 8-3 push finished off by a triple from Michael Ortale to make it 16-11. Dickinson then fought back to take the lead at 21-16 as Andrew Gostovich buried two triples, while Aaron Bailey took advantage of an outlet pass from Mann to knockdown a jumper in the lane. Three shots at the charity line from Derice along with two buckets by Joseph Bull brought SUNY to within one 24-23 still with five minutes left. Long-range shots by Skyler Venezia and Mann stretched the margin to five (30-25). Venezia continued to be hot from deep as he stuck two more from beyond the arc for a ten-point cushion 38-28 with 16:58 gone. The Dragons outscored the Devs 5-1 over the remainder of the half to leave DC ahead 39-33 at half.

Dickinson pushed the advantage back to double-figures less than two minutes into the period as Gostovich hit from deep, while Isaiah Edmond and Goeb also contributed to the scoresheet making it 45-35. The two sides traded points over the next three minutes with Edmond, Goeb, and Haueisen tallying for the Red and White to leave the score at 50-39. Oneonta responded by scoring seven of the next nine thanks to Graham Wooden and Bull trimming the gap to six at 52-46. A three-ball by Luke Spellman, followed by a layup for Venezia bumped the advantage out across the ten-point threshold again (57-46) still 13 minutes left. Five of the next seven went the way of the Dragons with Blessing Agbonlaho providing the lone DC bucket to leave it at 59-51. The Red and White continued to keep the opposition at bay with Bailey and Mann adding to the total to make it 65-58 at the 10:38 mark. Elijah Castillo, Bull, and Derice led a 5-0 run to cut the deficit down to just two 65-63. An "old-fashioned" three-point play and a jumper in the paint both  by Mann gave the Devils a 70-65 advantage with six minutes to go. After the teams exchanged buckets free throws by Delano Knox and Wooden brought the Dragons level 73-73 with just over four minutes to go. A minute later a steal by Venezia led to a Gostovich three, before Edmond hit a pull-up after forcing a steal himself. However, five straight from Oneonta tied the score again at 78-78 with 60-seconds left. Goeb and Venezia each split a pair of free throws over the final minute to make it 80-78. The Dragons got one final look at the tie at the buzzer, but the offering from Ortale came up short.
