Devils Kickoff 2023 With Loss to No. 15 Hopkins

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson men's basketball team began the second-half of their season with a stiff test on Wednesday night as the 15th-ranked Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins University visited the Kline Center. Unfortunately, for the Red and White they battled hard all night, but ultimately did not have enough as Hopkins left Carlisle with a 71-54 conference win.

Jumpers by Isaiah Edmond and Anthony Goeb had the home side trailing by just one 5-4 just over two minutes in. The Blue Jays then got buckets from Tom Quarry, Will Sykes, and Sidney Thybulle during a 9-0 run to push the lead to double-digits 14-4 with eight minutes off the clock. Dickinson chipped into the deficit a little bit with triples by Luke Spellman and Skyler Venezia (2) pulling the Devils to within 18-13 at the halfway point of the frame. A Jayden Nixon jumper made it 20-13, before Aaron Bailey, Edmond, and Venezia went on a 7-0 push over the next three minutes to level the score 20-20. Hopkins once again fought back with three-balls by Nixon and Quarry helping a 10-2 stretch for the guests to recapture the lead at 30-22. The Red and White scored six of the next eight points on triples from Brandon Wiercinski and Venezia to trim the gap to 32-28 with two minutes remaining. Back-to-back treys for Nixon and Quarry closed out the half for the visitors making it 38-28 heading to the locker room.

It took three minutes to see the first points of the second half when Quarry and Thybulle hit the bottom of the net for the Jays. Dickinson answered back with layups from Andrew Gostovich and Martin Mann bringing it back to a ten-point margin at 44-34 with five minutes off the clock. A Randy Shephard bucket was the only one for the Red and White over the next five minutes while the Jays mounted an 8-2 charge making it 52-36. Another triple from Venezia and a foul shot for Wiercinski kept DC within shouting distance 52-40 with 10:22 remaining. Hopkins tallied eight of the next 13 points with Edmond and Mann supplying the offense for the Devs putting the score at 60-45. After a Brian Johansson layup, Spellman hit from deep and Edmond netted four points to hack into the Hopkins lead slightly (65-52) at the 16:13 mark. The Blue Jays hit two more threes in the contest thanks to Carson James and Johansson, while Bailey posted the final basket of game to set the 71-54 score.
