CARLISLE, Pa. - For the second time this season the Dickinson field hockey team needed more than the 60 regulation minutes to sort out a winner in one of their games. Unfortunately for the Red and White the visiting Catholic University Cardinals needed just a little over three minutes into the extra session to pick up the 1-0 win at the Biddle Field Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The Devils had a great chance to take an early lead as they were awarded a penalty corner just 34-seconds in. That would result in
Sammi Moonay stepping into a shot inside the circle, but it was blocked down by the Catholic defense. The remainder of the quarter was played mostly in the midfield with the Cardinals getting the only other two attempts at goal. However, they both went off target.
Catholic was on the front foot in the second as the visitors had the only three shots of the period forcing one stop from Devils keeper
Saige Stevens with 18-ticks left in the half.
The third period belonged to DC with the Red and White getting three shots to the Cardinals zero and picking up three penalty corners. Dickinson's first opportunity came in the second minute with
Abby Marthins playing in a corner to
Morgan Yandow-Harding. Her shot was blocked by the defense, but the ball rolled out to
Becca Woods who ripped one wide of Abigail Kearney in the visiting cage. Moonay got a look off the Devils second corner of the frame, unfortunately it missed as well.Â
The fourth quarter saw chances at both ends of the pitch as Marthins was blocked with 50:11 off the clock. Then, Ashley Martin worked her way into the circle just 35-seconds later and stared down Stevens in a one-on-one opportunity, but the Devils goalie made a diving stop to keep it scoreless. Dickinson had the final shots of regulation with
Katie Marthins and Yandow-Harding both calling on Kearney to make saves pushing the game to overtime.
Catholic had the only shots of the extra period with Niki Micciche being denied once by Stevens, before taking advantage of a scrum in front of the cage to chip the ball over the keeper into the roof of the net for the winner.
