Devils Fast Start Not Enough Against Jays

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Dickinson volleyball team got off to a fast start on Tuesday night taking the first set from the host Elizabethtown College by a score of 25-20. Unfortunately for the Red and White the Blue Jays righted the ship after that winning the following three sets to grab a 3-1 non-conference win at Thompson Gymnasium.

Dickinson began the match strong as two kills by Emma Popham and a joint block between Alexa Barowski and Mathilde Verbitsky gave the guests a 5-2 advantage. After the Jays made it 6-4 on a score by Bryanna Miller, another Popham kill sparked a 6-1 charge capped off by an ace from Grace Coccagna to stretch the margin to 12-5. EC tried to rally back with points by Kara Davies, Georgianna Kahley, Gianna Krinock, and Katie Scaggs to trim the gap to 14-12. However, DC stormed back with a pair of kills from Sophia Denayer coming during a 6-2 run making it 20-14. The Jays closed within 22-20 thanks to a Miller kill, but two EC errors and a Popham kill ended the first 25-20.

The Red and White took a 2-1 lead to start the second, but a 6-2 response from the home side gave them a 7-4 edge. After the two sides traded the next four points, DC came up with five in a row finished off by a Popham kill (11-9). A Verbitsky score kept the Devils up two at 13-11, but then the Jays accounted for seven of the ensuing ten points with Popham and Verbitsky putting up kills for DC during that stretch to cut the visitors deficit to 18-16. Emma Lange, Jordan Schucker, and Denayer kept the Devils push going as they grabbed a slim one-point edge (19-18). EC ended the set with a 7-2 run for the 25-21 win.

Kills from Kahley, Krinock, and Scaggs put the hosts in front to kickoff the third set 6-2. A Popham score and two Jays miscues kept DC within an arm's length at 9-6. However, two Denayer kills and a solo for Verbitsky were not enough to help the Red and White as EC went on an 8-4 push to extend their advantage to 17-10. The two sides traded the following six points, before points by Barowski and Popham as well as two EC mistakes brought the score to 21-17. Emma Bitner, Kahley, and Scaggs closed out a 25-18 victory.

The Jays flew out to an 14-4 edge to start the fourth. Dickinson tried to fight back with a 5-1 run as Lange recorded three kills and Popham added one (15-9). EC stunted the Devils momentum immediately by scoring six of the ensuing seven points opening up a 21-10 lead. Once again DC put on their "hard hats" and tried to rally back with Cassidy Davis, Lange, Popham, and Verbitsky racking up five in a row to bring the gap to six at 21-15. Unfortunately, the Jays would not let DC pick up another point as a combination block between Britten and Kahley finished off the match.
