CARLISLE, Pa. - For the second match in a row the Dickinson women's soccer team was led by their young attacking core as first-years
Maddie St. Amand and
Katie Vassilakos provided all three markers on the afternoon for the Red and White as they picked up a 3-1 non-conference win over the visiting DeSales University Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon.
DeSales began the match with two early shots by Holly McFarland and Kerrigan de Meij, but neither tested Devils keeper
Sophia Kavulich. Dickinson made their first attempt at goal count as
Meg Tate played a fantastic ball into the path of Vassilakos who took a touch around visiting goalie Hannah Pacheco and tucked it into the net for the 1-0 edge in the 11th minute. Ten minutes later DSU attempted to tie things up off a corner, however, Katie Padgett was unable to get the shot on frame. The Red and White had three of the final four chances of the half with blasts from
Lexie Greene and Tate forcing Pacheco to clear her line.
It would take ten minutes into the second period before either side would ever get a look at frame when McFarland sent one over the top in the 55th. DC got their first shot three minutes later as
Emma Cooney went off target to the left, followed by an offering by Greene sailing over the top. Then, in the 63rd the Devils would break through again with the same scoring combination striking as Vassilakos finishing off the pass from Tate. There was not another shot in the game for 16-plus minutes until
Sarah Cudmore played St. Amand in behind the DSU defense and she opened her collegiate account for the 3-0 advantage. DeSales pulled one back with 81:47 off the clock when Sam Monteforte buried a shot off the crossbar that fell over the line for the goal. Dickinson locked in defensively the rest of the way not allowing a shot to secure the win.
