CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson field hockey team got two goals from
Morgan Yandow-Harding, but surrendered three goals in the third quarter to allow the visiting Susquehanna University to escape the Biddle Field Complex with a 3-2 non-conference win on Wednesday afternoon.
The visitors recorded the first shot 8:14 into the match when Emma Campitelli was turned away by
Saige Stevens. A minute later Kari Schmidt fired the ball wide of the mark. Then, Dickinson flipped momentum as
Maggie Carson and
Becca Woods had their blasts knocked aside by Mackenzie Bross, while
Katie Marthins ripped one wide. The Devils would take the lead in the final minute when
Abby Marthins inserted a corner, unfortunately for the River Hawks one of their defenders "blew a tire" on the wet turf and blocked a sure goal with her body leading to a penalty stroke for the Red and White. Yandow-Harding was tasked with stroke and she sent it by Bross for the 1-0 edge after one.
Sammi Moonay tried to add on to the hosts advantage in the first minute of the second, but her attempt missed. Susquehanna would muster the final two shots of the quarter with Ashley Schreffler getting two looks at cage. One went wide of the target, while her second rip was stopped by Stevens to leave DC up 1-0 going to the half.
Four minutes into the third the Hawks would breakthrough the "Wall of Stevens" when Sophia Prata sent a shot wide. However, during that play a foul whistled on the Devils inside the circle led to a stroke for the visitors where Annalee Smith knocked it into the cage for the tie. Over the next two minutes each side recorded two shots with the Devils chances coming from Moonay and Woods. Then, with 40 minutes off the clock Rebecca Ripans inserted a corner that found Smith who had her shot blocked by the keeper. However, the ball bounced off of Stevens right to Ripans for the tap-in. The same process repeated itself three minutes later when a shot by Smith off a corner was blocked by the defense, but was finished off by Prata for the 3-1 lead heading to the fourth.
The first shot from each team in the final period were unable to test the keepers. Dickinson would work themselves back into the attack circle with 51:46 off the clock and watched an attempt by
Malena Malka Goldman snuffed out by the Hawks defense. Bross was called into action two minutes later as she shutdown
Abby Hill. The Red and White took full advantage of their lone corner of the frame when A. Marthins found Yandow-Harding for a blast from the left side that eluded the keeper. Unfortunately, the home side was only able to get one more shot the rest of the game, but the offering from
Maggie Carson was blocked.Â
