SWARTHMORE, Pa. - For the first 20 minutes the Dickinson men's basketball team went "blow for blow" with the tenth-ranked Swarthmore College trailing by just six at the break, but the host Garnet asserted themselves over the final period to earn a 70-50 Centennial Conference win at Tarble Pavilion.
The home side got out to a 5-2 lead thanks to a triple from George Visconti and a layup by George Corzine, while
Anthony Goeb knocked down two foul shots for the Devs. A layup from
Martin Mann along with a trey for
Andrew Gostovich brought DC even 7-7 with just over three minutes gone. Michael Caprise, Aidan Godfrey and Eddie Paquette tallied six of the next eight to grab a 13-9 advantage, before
Randy Shephard setup Goeb for a layup. However, the Garnet then answered back in a big way with a 12-2 romp capped off by a Visconti layup to push the lead over the ten-point threshold at 25-13 with 7:30 remaining. After TJ Chapman and
Brandon Wiercinski traded buckets the Devils went to work ending the period on an 8-3 charge getting baskets from Mann and Shephard to pull within 30-24 going to the locker room.
Mann and Visconti exchanged scores over the first minute, before a 12-2 run for the home side opened the lead out to 44-29 with 13:59 left in the game. During that stretch a Mann layup was the only offense for the Red and White. Layups from
Blessing Agbonlaho,
Aaron Bailey and Mann over the next two minutes allowed the Devils to trim the gap down to 48-35. Triples by Cal Hanson and Visconti coupled with a layup from Corzine opened the margin back up over 20 at 56-35 still with half the period to play. Jumpers by Bailey and Mann coupled with a splash from deep for Wiercinski made it 60-42 with 6:40 left.
B.J. McNeil, Agbonlaho, Bailey, Mann and Shephard all scored during the final few minutes, but it was not enough as the Garnet secured the win.
