CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson volleyball team battled hard all night long, but ultimately were unable to overcome the visiting Gettysburg College on Wednesday falling by a final of 3-1 to the Bullets at the Kline Center in Centennial Conference action.
Dickinson got off to a great start as an ace for
Grace Coccagna and a kill by
Amelia Kim put the home side up 6-3. Gettysburg responded with five straight thanks to scores by Kendall Erpenbeck and Mary Huegel to make it 8-6. A kill each from
Alexa Barowski and
Emma Popham helped DC take five of the next seven to reclaim an 11-10 edge. That was when the Bullets went on the attack as Olivia Biggs, Sophie Nasir, Alycen Radolovic and Kylie Ulrich organized a 14-2 outburst to jump way ahead at 24-13. A service error for Chelsea O'Leary followed by a service ace from
Camille Dofiles made it 24-15, before Brooke Lauletta put away the final point (25-15).
Once again the Red and White started strong in the second as kills finished off by
Cassidy Davis, Barowski, Kim, Popham gave them a 10-4 lead. Points from Biggs and Ulrich stopped the charge for a second, before a combination block by Barowski and Kim set off a 5-1 Devils spurt to open it up to 15-8. The trio of Catherine Holtz, Huegel and Radolovic helped the Bullets to battle back to within 19-16. However, the home side had the answer as two kills from Kim and solos by
Dessie Anne Nietert and Popham capped off the frame at 25-19.
Huegel, Radolovic and Ulrich had the visitors ahead 4-2 to begin the third, but then three GC miscues and a pair of kills slammed home by Barowski gave DC a slim 7-5 advantage. The teams then exchanged 5-0 runs as Kim accounted for the only score for the Devils to maintain the two-point cushion at 12-10. Gettysburg then began to just chip away at the deficit with Holtz, Huegel, Radolovic and Ulrich pulled them even at 16-16. Kills by Davis, Kim and Nietert allowed DC to stay within striking distance at 20-18. However, three of the next four went to the visitors to make it 23-19. The Devils kept fighting though as two GC miscues along with a kill from Kim trimmed the gap to 23-22. Unfortunately, a service error and a combination block finished the set 25-22.
After Gettysburg took a 2-0 lead to kickoff the fourth DC charged back as a kill each from Barowski, Davis and Popham went on a 10-2 charge to grab a 10-4 advantage. The Bullets stunted the rampage for a second, prior to Davis and Kim stretching the margin to eight at 14-6. That woke up the Gettysburg attack as a kill put home by Radolovic sparked an 11-3 run to draw level 17-17. A GC error and a kill for Popham gave the Red and White a slight 19-18 edge. The trio of Holtz, Huegel and Radolovic made sure the Devils got no closer as they ended the set and match with a 7-2 push for the 25-21 win.
