COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - For the seventh-time this season the Dickinson volleyball team needed all five sets to determine a winner in one of their matches and for the fourth-time it was the Red and White that came out on top as they knocked off the host Ursinus College Bears by a 3-2 margin at Helfferich Hall in Centennial Conference action.
Dickinson got two early kills from
Dessie Anne Nietert and a single by
Cassidy Davis, but found themselves trailing 9-5. The Devils then went on an 8-2 gallop thanks to scores for
Amelia Kim,
Emma Popham and Nietert to take a 13-11 lead. However, Caroline Sherman would be a main reason the Bears took six of the next seven to grab a three-point cushion (17-14). Four Ursinus errors and a kill from Davis brought DC back to the front 19-17, but the home side then closed the set with an 8-3 run ending on a spike from Mel Eglinton for the 25-22 win.Â
Points by Kathryn Arcara,
Alexa Barowski and Popham helped the two sides to share the opening ten points of the second. Davis and Popham would then give the Red and White a slip 8-7 advantage, before the hosts collected five of the ensuing seven to make it 12-10 UC. The group of
Grace Coccagna, Barowski, Kim, Nietert and Popham organized an 8-3 march to go back ahead 18-15. Daejah Bazemore and Alonna McCummings pulled Ursinus level at 21-21 after claiming six of the next nine. Dickinson put the frame away by scoring the following four points thanks to Davis and Popham (25-21).Â
Dickinson began the third set strong as scores by
Mathilde Verbitsky, Nietert and Popham made it 6-3. The duo of Bazemore and Sherman pulled the Bears back to within 8-7, before Barowski, Coccagna, Davis, Nietert and Verbitsky answered back for the Devils extending their advantage to 15-9. Aces by Emma Illovsky and Eglinton along with kills by Bazemore, McGinn and Spotts cut the deficit down to just one at 20-19 as during that stretch
Ann Marie Patterson, Davis, Popham and Verbitsky scored for DC. Four Bears miscues brought the visitors to the verge of taking the third at 24-22, but then three kills by Eglinton pushed the hosts ahead 25-24. However, a Patterson ace as well as kills for Nietert, Popham and Verbitsky made it 29-28 Dickinson. Unfortunately, Rachel Bernard, Erin Dychdala and Bazemore tallied the next three for the 31-29 win.Â
The two teams traded 4-0 runs to start the fourth with
Camille Dofiles, Nietert and Popham picking up the points for DC. A pair of Popham kills and three home errors push DC ahead 9-7. Ursinus answered back with a 7-2 run finished off by a Eglinton score to make it 14-11 home side. Dickinson took six of the ensuing ten points thanks to Barowski, Dofiles and Nietert to close within one at 18-17. Barowski and Verbitsky continued to keep the pressure up organizing a 6-1 outburst to make it 23-19. Scores from McCummings and Sherman helped UC to stunt the charge (23-22), before a kill each from Barowski and Kim forced a deciding fifth 25-22.
Dickinson was in complete command to begin the fifth as Barowski, Coccagna, Dofiles and Kim made it 8-2 visitors. Kills by Maci Dobbins-Timochenko, Bazemore, Dychdala and Spotts brought the Bears back into the set at 12-8. Each side would tally three more points with Barowski accounting for the DC points to close out the 15-11 win.
