Game Recap: Field Hockey | | David Adamovage, Director of Athletic Communications

One Goal is All the Devils Need to Knock Off No. 23 Owls

BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Dickinson field hockey team needed just one goal from Abby Marthins early in the fourth quarter to knock off the 23rd-ranked Bryn Mawr College Owls 1-0 on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action at Applebee Field.

After the early portion of the quarter was contested primarily in the midfield it would be Bryn Mawr that tallied the first shot of the game with 7:13 gone as Eva Yacura went wide of keeper Taylor Schlein. Just over a minute later Dickinson worked themselves into the attacking circle and earned a penalty corner. Howwever, it would not result in a shot towards Peri Mulveny. Then in the 12th minute, the visitors had their first chance on goal, unfortunately, it was push aside by Mulveny to leave it 0-0 through one.

The second period saw the same type of tight defensive battle as neither side could really gain the offensive end, while there were ten fouls called between the teams over the opening seven minutes. Dickinson would actually be the lone squad to tally shots over the remainder of the frame as both Sammi Moonay and Nicole Uebele were stopped by Mulveny to send things to the half with no score.

Early in the third an early green card to DC gave the Owls a player-up situation for two minutes and led to two quick chances from Sophie Vagts and Yacura that were both denied by Schlein. The Red and White struggled to put together any kind of sustained attack throughout the period until the 44th minute when the Devils went player-up thanks to a yellow card to Zoe Woon. However, despite two late corners the visitors were unable to create a shot which moved the match onto the fourth.

Dickinson needed 3:27 of the fourth quarter for A. Marthins to put the ball behind Mulveny for the 1-0 lead. Then, in the 52nd-minute the home side had a great opportunity to tie the game when a corner from Annick van Blerkom led to a shot from Yacura that Schlein stopped. From that moment on the Devils defense was lockdown as they did not allow a shot the rest of the game to secure the victory.
