CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson men's basketball team attempted to get back to their winning ways on Saturday afternoon with a home conference contest. Unfortunately, for the Red and White the team on the other side of the court was the 14th-ranked Garnet of Swarthmore College. Despite a solid effort from the Devils all afternoon they were unable to complete the upset falling 67-55 at the Kline Center.
The visitors got off to the fast start as triples from Vinny DeAngelo and Cal Hanson along with a pair of layups from Michael Caprise made it 10-5 with five minutes off the clock. Buckets by
Aaron Bailey and
Nate Ogbu knotted things at 10-10, before Nyle Colman, Caprise and Hanson racked up seven of the next ten for the 17-13 edge with less than ten minutes to play. Once again Dickinson had the response with jumpers for
Isaiah Edmond and Bailey tying it up at 17 at the 11:39 mark. Foul shots by Hanson and a basket for DeAngelo gave the guests a 21-17 edge, but the first points in a DC jersey for
Luis Ruiz was followed by a trey out of the hands of
Anthony Goeb to give the Red and White their first lead 22-21 still with six minutes left. The trio of Caprise, Coleman and DeAngelo amassed a 12-4 charge with
Skyler Venezia supplying the only offense for the home side to make it 33-26. Devin Burger and Edmond would exchange two free throws each for the final points of the half as Swarthmore took a 35-28 advantage to the break.Â
Baskets from
David Petrusev and Venezia helped the hosts keep the margin where it was at half 39-32 with two minutes gone. However, three points each for Caleb Aurelien and DeAngelo open the lead to 45-32, but then jumpers for both Ogbu and Petrusev cut the deficit back to 45-36 with just over five minutes gone. The Garnet continued to hold the Red and White at-bay as Eddie Paquette, Burger, Caprise, and Coleman were able to score six of the next ten, while
Brandon Wiercinski hit from three and Edmond split two at the line for the hosts to make it 51-40. A pair at the charity line by Edmond pulled the Devils back within nine (51-42), but a 10-2 outburst from the visitors extended the gap to 59-44 with 4:11 to play. A pair on the line for Edmond stalled the charge for a moment, but Swarthmore came back five in a row to stretch the lead out to 65-46. Dickinson would close out the game with a 9-2 romp of their own with six coming from Edmond, before Wiercinski hit a triple just prior to the horn for the 67-55 final.
