Devils Finish Sunshine State Swing With Win Over Nazareth

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - After being tripped up yesterday by Bethel University the Dickinson men's basketball team responded in a big way as all five starters reached double-digits en route to an 85-76 win over the Nazareth University Golden Flyers on Wednesday afternoon at the McArthur Center on the campus of Eckerd College.

After having a cold shooting day on Wednesday, the Red and White got off to a strong start as Anthony Goeb delivered three triples, while Nate Ogbu and David Petrusev each added buckets to contribute to a 15-3 lead just five minutes in. Nazareth responded by claiming eight of the next dozen points as Solomon McFarlane, Tyler Putney and Jaylen Savage scoring for the Flyers, followed by two on the stripe for Isaiah Edmond and a trey by Ogbu to leave things at 20-11. Luis Ruiz setup Andrew Gostovich for the lone DC bucket during a 7-2 Nazareth stretch to close within 22-18, before triples from both Matt Mahoney and Skyler Venezia combined for an 11-3 outburst for the Devils to make it 33-21 with 5:23 left. Shots from deep by both McFarlane and Putney did little to put a dent in the Dickinson advantage as Edmond, Goeb, Ogbu, Petrusev and Venezia extended the margin out to 45-30 at the 19-minute mark. Logan Blankenberg posted the final points of the period by knocking home three-of-four at the foul line sending the teams to the break with DC ahead 45-33.

Two early threes for Nazarth immediately chipped into the gap at 45-39, but jumpers from Ogbu helped the Red and White maintain an eight-point cushion 49-41 with three minutes gone. The Golden Flyers then flew themselves right back into the game with Luke Insley and Savage tallying five straight (49-46), before the duo of Ogbu and Venezia opened the Devils advantage back to nine (57-48). Bombs from distance over the next three minutes for Edmond, Ogbu and Venezia extended the lead over double-digits to 66-53 with 10:31 remaining. Nazareth did not go down quietly however, as Jordan Haggard, Blankenberg and McFarlane organized a 14-4 run with Ogbu and Petrusev tallying for DC to make it 70-67 at the 14:54 mark. Dickinson made sure the Flyers could get no closer though by taking seven of the ensuing 11 points thanks to Petrusev and Venezia leaving the score at 77-71 with 69-ticks left. The trio of Edmond, Ogbu and Venezia would salt the game away at the foul line knocking down six of a possible eight shots over the final minute to claim the 85-76 win.
