YORK, Pa. - Graduate Student
Nate Ogbu posted his second double-double of the season on Saturday afternoon recording game-highs in both points (21) and rebounds (14), but it would not be enough as the host York College of Pennsylvania Spartans escaped Charles Wolf Gymnasium with a 60-56 non-conference win.
York was out of the blocks quick as triples from Kai Cipalla and Jayden Rowe aided a 9-4 run over the first five minutes, but the Devils fought back by scoring seven of the next ten points thanks to
Cole Cosby,
Luis Ruiz and Ogbu to cut the margin down to one 12-11 with 13:27 to play. Layups by both Chris Miers and Aleks Smith made it 16-11, before Ogbu notched five straight to bring the Red and White level at 16-16 at the halfway point of the period. An "old-fashioned" three-point play for Shawn Barclay gave YCP a 19-16 edge. However,
Matt Mahoney,
Randy Shephard and Ogbu racked up six in a row to push DC ahead by three 22-19 at the 11:29 mark.
Isaiah Edmond and
Skyler Venezia were the only points for the Devils during a 12-4 outburst for the home side capped off by two at the foul line for Tate Landis to open up a 31-26 lead with 2:33 left. The visitors ended the frame by tallying five of the remaining seven points with Shephard setting up Ogbu, prior to
Brandon Wiercinski sticking a triple off a nice dish by
Andrew Gostovich to pull within 33-31 at halftime.
The Spartans started the second period with a bang as well with Johnny Kennevan, Cipalla and Miers all converting in the paint to extend the lead to 39-33 with 4:04 off the clock. Dickinson racked up the next five points with Edmond scoring in the lane, while Gostovich found Ogbu for a shot from long-range to trim the gap to one (39-38) just over a minute later. After Miers and Gostovich traded buckets, Cipalla scored five consecutive points to bump the hosts advantage to 46-40. The Devils answered back with an 8-0 charge on baskets from
Anthony Goeb,
Matt Smith, Mahoney and Ogbu giving DC a 48-46 edge with 7:30 left. York then seized control of the game as a Jackson Mascari layup kicked off a 13-2 outburst ending on another Mascari jumper to make it 59-50 at the 18:14 mark. The Red and White would close the game with a 6-1 run on scores from Ogbu and Venezia to set the 60-56 final.
