SELINSGROVE, Pa. - The Dickinson College women's track and field team competed at Susquehanna University in their Early Season Multi and Invitational at the Robert I. Estill Field House. At such a big meet, these women dominated their respective events and made an impression as a team unit, breaking AARTFC records over the busy two days.
Sprints
In the large field of the 60-meter dash, Sara Penuela came in 2nd with a time of 8.01 seconds with Mariana Penuela in 11th (8.20); Maddie Kyle in 21st (8.46); Eliza Gichner in 36th (8.84); and Catarina Acosta in 46th (9.40).
Emerlee Simons took home the grand prize in the 200-meter dash, placing first with 26.80 seconds with these Red Devils following suit: Leah Biwott (27th, 29.36); Gichner (29th, 29.43); Swayze (30th, 29.45); Marley Kurey (31st, 29.46); Naomi Alperin (37th, 29.97); Sylvie McMaken-Marsh (38th, 29.97); Morgan Mooradian (41st, 30.24); Acosta (52nd, 32.11).
Simons continued her reign on the track with another first-place finish and the AARTFC record in the 400-meter dash with 1:00.40 minutes. Kurey came in 4th with 1:05.16, Mooradian in 12th (1:08.96), Swayze in 14th (1:09.06) and Vitu in 16th with 1:09.72).
After performing in the pentathlon on Friday, Sophia Kovatsis earned a 4th place finish with 2,651 points. And three (3) Red Devils competed in the 60-meter hurdles with Kovatsis taking first place clocking in at 9.88 seconds. Following her is Alperin in 15 (10.44) and McMaken-Marsh in 18th (10.63).
Distance
The women dominated the distance events, with first place finishes in all the events the team competed in. In the 800, Myra Naqvi earned her way to first place with a run of 2:23.07 minutes. Amiyah Priebe came in 3rd (2:25.71), Charlotte Kratovil-Lavelle followed in 7th (2:28.51), Sammy Jo Barnes finished 13th (2:34.40), Maddie Garber got 15th (2:36.46), Rebecca Roberts in 25th (2:49.82) and Leah Bell closed out in 27th with 2:58.61.
Every woman who competed in the 800 except for Barnes ran the competitive mile run and finished with an impressive sweep of first, second, and third place winners. Naqvi in 1st with 5:17.56, which was also a new AARTFC record; Priebe in 2nd with 5:22.18; Kratovil-Lavelle in 3rd (5:22.29). Garber competed well for a 7th place win (5:31.20), as well as Roberts (15th, 6:09.18) and Bell (25th, 6:43.03).
Closing out the distance events is the 3000-meter run, where once again a first place finish is ell deserved. Barnes claimed that first place spot with a time of 10:49.77 while the only other Dickinson competitor Higgans-Haas took home 5th (12:16.25).
Relays
In the 4x400-meter relay, the Red Devils had two (2) teams compete. The cohort of Mikusova, M. Penuela, S Penuela, and Simons took 2nd with a time of 4:13.80 while the other team of Kyle, Kurey, Vitu, and Swayze claimed 6th with 4:42.33.
Field
In the high jump, Mooradian came in at 19th jumping 1.37m, while across the way at pole vault is where McMaken-Marsh placed 5th by vaulting 2.70 meters. The long jump competition, like the rest of the field events, went well for our feisty devils. S. Penuela placed 2nd (5.22m) and her sister M. Penuela jumped 4.91 for 6th place. Biwott came in 13th with 4.57m while Vitu finished in 27th (4.05m).
In the shot put, Claire Shearer took home 5th by throwing 11.07m while Labrada claimed 8th (10.35m) and Deep in 14th (9.88m). These same people performed in the weight throw taking home 6th (Deep, 13.5m), 17th (Labrada, 10.53m), and 23rd (Shearer, 9.18m).
Next on the Track
The Red Devils now enjoy a month long break before coming back to the track and field events on January 20th at the 2024 Moravian Indoor Meet starting at 9am.
