CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson women's lacrosse team got goals from
Gabby Guadalupe,
Bella Guckes,
Delaney Herbert and
Emma Wynne during a six goal third quarter to erase a 9-6 deficit en route to a 13-12 non-conference win over 19th-ranked Denison University at Biddle Field on Sunday afternoon in the home opener.
Dickinson recorded the first shot of the game just 61-seconds in when
Liv Yeagle went wide which led to Josie Lucchesi beating
Peyton VanDorpe for the early lead. Off the ensuing draw control
Faith Parker would earn a free-position chance, but was denied by Caroline O'Dea. The visitors tallied four of the next six shots with the DC attempts coming from Herbert and Yeagle with neither of the forcing a save. The following three shots found the back of the net with Mary Martinson scoring for Denison, while
Liz Barroll and Wynne solved O'Dea to leave things tied 2-2 with 7:12 left. Two minutes later a stop by O'Dea on Parker led to Grayson O'Marra finding Martinson for the 3-2 edge. The two goalies would combine for three saves over the remainder of the period to leave it at 3-2.
It took Dickinson less than a minute into the second to produce the equalizer as Herbert found Barroll for her second (3-3). O'Dea prevented DC from taking the lead as she stopped Guadalupe, but was not to be outdone by VanDorpe who provided a pair of saves against Abby Van Metre. A yellow card given to Parker led to Lucchesi hitting the crossbar, before Anna DeVuono dumped the rebound over the goalie for the 4-3 edge with five minutes gone. Over the following two minutes Herbert tallied for the Red and White to knot the score, but Jane Lukens finished off a free-position shot to reclaim the lead. The next two attempts rippled the net as Ashley Viglione pushed it to 6-4, prior to Barroll completing her hat trick off a dish from Herbert to pull within 6-5 still with 6:17 left. The Big Red stretched the lead back to three 8-5 thanks to Allaire Kotz and Maddie Morrell. However, DC would capture the momentum going to the break with Guckes burying the first home goal of her Devils career making it 8-6.
The visitors were on the attack early recording the first three shots of the third with the last one from Viglione beating VanDorpe for the 9-6 advantage. Off the ensuing draw control grabbed by Parker, Wynne put the rock behind O'Dea. A couple of penalties against Denison resulted in a pair of player-up markers for Guckes to finish off the hat-trick and tie the game at 9-9 with 9:39 left. Two minutes later a giveaway by Sydney Lavin led to Herbert scooping up the ball and firing a shot beyond the reach of O'Dea to put the Devils on top 10-9. Dickinson kept riding the momentum with Guckes forcing a save from O'Dea resulting a rebound out to Wynne who scored making it 11-9. After another draw control win by
Emma Norton a yellow card was issued to O'Marra which then led to Guckes finding Guadalupe stretching it 12-9 still with 5:42 remaining. VanDorpe would make two more stops in the period, before O'Marra tallied a free-position goal cutting it to 12-10 after three.
Four minutes into the final quarter DeVuono sent a pass over her teammates heads going out of bounds giving the rock back to the Devils where they pushed the lead to 13-10 through Guadalupe. A minute after that a foul on VanDorpe led to a free-position with the goalie out of the cage leading to Kotz hitting an empty net. The next eight minutes were primarily played in the midfield as each keeper was tasked with making just one save. Martinson would cap off the scoring for the day in the final minute setting the 13-12 final.
