Devils Upended by Bullets at the Battlefield

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Dickinson men's basketball team saw their two-game win streak halted and their late season playoff push hit a roadblock on Tuesday night as the host Gettysburg College was able to hold on for a 66-59 Centennial Conference win at Bream Gymnasium.

The Devils were strong out of the gate as five points from Anthony Goeb and a contested finish in the lane for Martin Mann gave DC an early 7-3 edge with three minutes gone. Gettysburg responded with a tough layup by Jordan Stafford and a foul shot from Carl Schaller to pull within 7-6, before a driving Randy Shephard drew a foul on Schaller leading to split a the line for an 8-6 edge with 13:15 to play. Over the next two minutes Dickinson would produce seven of the next nine points with Mann knocking home two at the stripe and Shephard hitting from 15 out to push things to 12-8, prior to Skyler Venezia drilling a triple for the 15-8 lead prompting a Bullets timeout at the 9:31 mark. Nate Williams and Stafford sandwiched a layup for Andrew Gostovich making it 17-11, before Goeb cashed in a feed from Gostovich (19-11) inside eight minutes remaining. The home team charged back with a 7-2 run on buckets by Max Pernetti, Schaller and Stafford trimming the gap to three (21-18) with 3:42 left leading to a Devils timeout. A free throw from the Centennial Conference Player of the Week Isaiah Edmond and a final minute layup by Goeb accounted for the final three points for the Red and White of the half as GC closed on a 7-3 push for the 25-24 edge at the break.

To begin the second period each team recorded a basket inside the first minute with Gostovich scoring for DC, while Ryan McKeon finished in the lane for the hosts. On the next trip down the floor Mann would convert two at the line, but Stafford answered back with an "old-fashioned" three-point play to hold onto a 30-28 lead. Five of the ensuing six went the way of the Bullets to open up a six-point cushion 35-29 with 3:28 off the clock. The next three minutes saw the hosts extend the gap by one to 38-31. However, four straight for the Red and White from Edmond and Goeb closed the gap to just three 38-35 at the halfway point of the frame. Unfortunately, for the visitors GC grabbed the next four, before Aaron Bailey netting two on the charity line to make it 42-37. A 6-1 home pushed sent the lead to double-digits 48-38 with just under seven to play. Mann responded with a layup, but then DC missed four consecutive shots in a 20-second span to keep things right where they were 48-39 at the 15-minute mark. A three-point play from Brandon Wiercinski held the margin at nine (51-42). Two Edmond layups continued to give the Devils life at 54-46. However, despite the best efforts of Edmond and Mann foul shots from Antonello Baggi, Schaller, Stafford and Williams allowed the Bullets to see out the 66-59 final.
