SPARKS, Md. - The Dickinson women's lacrosse team did not let an early 7-1 deficit deter them from staying unbeaten as the Red and White used a devastating 11-1 run during the middle part of the game to build up a lead and never relinquish it as they held on for a 16-15 non-conference win over Saint Mary's College of Maryland on Saturday night at USA Lacrosse Headquarters Tierney Field.
It took two minutes for the Seahawks to take the lead as Colin Horton hit Hailey Betch for the finish past
Peyton VanDorpe. After VanDorpe denied MC Mortimer a minute later
Liv Yeagle went in search of the equalizer, but missed Maddie Clemmer's cage. Then with 5:06 off the clock Betch notched her second of the period to continue what amounted to be a four-goal run for SMC as Madison Laine made it 4-0 with 8:01 left. A win on the ensuing draw by
Faith Parker led to DC getting their first of the evening when
Delaney Herbert picked up an unassisted marker. Dickinson was limited to just one shot over the next five minutes as Clemmer stopped
Liz Barroll, while the Seahawks netted three more to open up a 7-1 advantage with two minutes remaining. The Red and White built up some momentum the rest of the quarter scoring with their next three shots as
Bella Guckes and Barroll (2) solved Clemmer to close within 7-4. They almost got one more prior to the horn, but
Riley Kuehn pinged one off the post.
The Devils defense put the clamps on SMC during the second allowing just one shot over the first ten minutes, while scoring four times themselves. With just over a minute gone Clemmer turned away Guckes, before
Syd MacKeigan hit the back of the net 40-seconds later. Three minutes later
Caroline Tone knocked the ball loose from Horton leading to a transition chance for Parker that was saved. However, MacKeigan got to the ensuing loose ball and found Yeagle for the finish closing to within 7-6 with 10:25 left. The Red and White tallied on two of their next three shots thanks to Guckes and Herbert, while
Maisy Lewerenz was told no by Clemmer to leave DC on top at 8-7 at the 9:24 mark. Each team scored once more in the half with Lily Davison tying the score at 8-8, prior to Kuehn cashing in unassisted for the 9-8 edge. Horton had a chance to level the score going into the break with a free-position chance, but VanDorpe had the answer.
Dickinson continued to put all the pressure on early in the third with Herbert, Kuehn and Yeagle all recording shots inside the opening two minutes, prior to Guckes completing her hat trick. The Red and White added two more over the following two minutes to extend the advantage to 12-8 still with 11:31 to play. The Seahawks would watch VanDorpe shutdown Elodie Scala a minute later, before Laine notched a free-position marker. Yeagle responded with a free-position goal of her own at the 7:46 mark to make it 13-9. VanDorpe continued her strong night with two more saves on Bella Dunigan and Mortimer. Unfortunately the next two Seahawk chances found the cage with E. Scala scoring off a feed from her sister Katelin Scala, before the two flipped positions 30-seconds later to cut the deficit down to 13-11 with 3:42 remaining. DC added one more in the last minute courtesy of Herbert to take a 14-11 lead to the fourth.Â
SMC gave themselves a spark early in the final period with Betch solving the DC keeper. The Seahawks kept up the attack tallying the next three shots scoring once more thanks to Davison to trim the gap to one 14-13 with six minutes off the clock. Off the ensuing draw won by
Caroline Pirone, MacKeigan worked herself free in the attack area for a shot and goal pushing the cushion back to two (15-13). Another win at the circle by Pirone led to the 16th goal of the night when Herbert fed a skip pass across the D to Guckes who stepped up from 12yds and rocketed one beyond the reach of Clemmer (16-13). SMC fought back hard in the final two minutes with Betch and Davison scoring to cut the deficit to 16-15. The Devils were able to see out the game when
Emma Norton won the final draw and was able to run out the clock.Â
