EMERSON, Ga. - The Dickinson women's lacrosse team got hat tricks from both
Delaney Herbert and
Liv Yeagle, but it would not be enough as the Red and White suffered their first setback of the season falling 16-10 to the Thoroughbreds of Skidmore College in non-conference action at the LakePointe Sports Complex.
Dickinson applied the early pressure with
Faith Parker and Yeagle forcing stops out of Phoebe Beshlian inside the opening minute-plus, before Herbert finished of an unassisted marker. Skidmore gained control off the ensuing draw control and knotted the score right up when Lily Schwartzman beat
Peyton VanDorpe. Yeagle and Gabriella Modesti each missed the cage for their respective sides, prior to Modesti getting a second-crack at goal and giving SC the lead. However, a minute later DC was back on level terms as
Liz Barroll found Herbert who buried her second of the period with 8:14 left. A stop by Beshlian on
Gabby Guadalupe, led to a pair of Thoroughbreds shots with Camille Pontone reclaiming the advantage for Skidmore (3-2). The seesaw quarter continued as tallies by
Regan Kawa (free-position) and Herbert surrounded a goal by Pontone to leave things at 4-4. The Red and White had the opportunity to grab the advantage heading to the second, but Beshlian turned away Guadalupe to preserve the tie.
Two minutes into the next period neither side could really gain a foothold as there were just two chances one from each team with Parker missing wide, while Modesti ripped one over the top of VanDorpe's goal. With 3:50 off the clock a yellow card was assessed to
Bella Guckes resulting in a player-up for Skidmore. 43-seconds into that opportunity Pontone made it 5-4, before Avery Geddes pushed it out to 6-4 approximately 40-ticks after that. The advantage grew to 7-4 thanks to Grace deBenedictics, which led to DC taking timeout with 6:55 left in the half. Dickinson attempted to stop the Thoroughbreds gallop off the ensuing draw that was taken by Herbert, unfortunately the rock was jarred out of
Syd MacKeigan's stick by Brooke LaVallee resulting in Modesti extending the gap to 8-4. After Yeagle caused a turnover Guckes ran down the loose ball and fed it to Kawa who hit Yeagle for the finish. That goal with 4:08 left marked the first DC shot since 13:08 remained ending a nine-minute shotless stretch. The Red and White tried to ride the momentum of a save by VanDorpe to another goal, but Kawa went wide and then was denied by Beshlian with 2:10 left. 29-seconds later Skidmore reclaimed a four-goal cushion (Julia Cafasso), followed by the seventh-point of the day for Modesti as she made it 10-5. The Devils recorded the final marker of the half when Barroll setup Parker who blasted a shot beyond the reach of Beshlian (10-6).
Coming out of the break Dickinson continued to struggle to get their offense on track as they were held without a shot through the first six-plus minutes of the frame until MacKeigan was stopped by Beshlian. However, during that time Skidmore added two more to grab a commanding 12-6 edge with markers coming from Elizabeth Walsh and deBenedictis. With 5:42 remaining the Red and White had a chance to dig into the deficit a little bit, but
Riley Kuehn had her free-position opportunity stuffed by Beshlian. Dickinson finally notched their first tally of the period with Guadalupe receiving the feed from Yeagle for the shot and goal. Each team buried the rock once more in the quarter with Modesti (free-position) and Yeagle scoring for their respective sides to leave the score at 13-8 with 15-minutes to play.
The Thoroughbreds added to their lead 1:12 into the final stanza when Maddy Marr delivered a free-position marker pushing it to 14-8. Dickinson remained without a shot over six-plus minutes as VanDorpe made a pair of saves to keep her team within striking distance until Yeagle got the Devils first look at cage with 8:31 remaining, but had it blocked by the defense. Yeagle continued to apply the pressure for the Red and White as she was shutdown by Beshlian once, before taking a
Maisy Lewerenz dish and stuffing it behind the goalie. Off the following draw SC tallied yet again thanks to LaVallee. However, DC answered in kind courtesy of Parker, unfortunately deBenedictis took advantage of another free-position chance to push the margin back to six (16-10) inside the final two minutes. Neither team would record a shot the rest of the way as the Thoroughbreds ran out the clock to secure the win.
