EMERSON, Ga. - The Dickinson women's lacrosse team broke open a 10-10 game with three goals in the fourth quarter courtesy of
Gabby Guadalupe,
Delaney Herbert and
Riley Kuehn to knock off the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan University by a final of 13-11 at the LakePointe Sports Complex.
Each team made their first shot of the game count as
Liv Yeagle and Sophia Staples-Roy traded markers in the opening two minutes. Dickinson struggled to mount much of an offensive attack over the next five minutes as the only shots created came from Staples-Roy that hit the post and then Sophia DelGallo who was shutdown by DC keeper
Peyton VanDorpe. The Red and White finally worked their way back into the offensive half with seven minutes remaining when Guadalupe missed the cage, before
Emma Norton took a feed from
Mia Seergae and ripped a shot at Cadence Jobe who tuned it to the side. Two minutes later DelGallo solved VanDorpe to reclaim the lead. However, the Devils would strike twice in the last three minutes thanks to
Liz Barroll and Yeagle notching her second of the period to make it 3-2 after one.
Within the first seven minutes of the second quarter the goals were plentiful as
Faith Parker missed wide to start and Tiffany Trinh was denied by VanDorpe. After those two misses however, the next four hit the back of the cage with two going each way as Guadalupe tallied twice for DC, while Grace Egan and Sam Frary responded for OWU letting the Devils maintain a slim one-goal edge (5-4) with 8:19 to play. VanDorpe notched another stop at the 9:03 mark, prior to allowing back-to-back Bishops markers from Amara Carlson and Nicole Klabus (6-5). Dickinson recorded the remaining three shots of the half with Kuehn forcing a stop out of Jobe and missing the target once, while Yeagle buried a free-position shot to draw level 6-6 heading to halftime.
Each team mounted a three-goal run during the third quarter with Dickinson taking the first charge tallying on their opening two chances thanks Parker and
Regan Kawa (Parker assist). The Red Devils kept applying the pressure with Yeagle firing one at Jobe that was stopped. However, DC opened it up to 9-6 when
Bella Guckes finished off a nice dish from Herbert with 11:51 remaining. Jobe would record two more saves over the ensuing six minutes denying both Guadalupe and Herbert, while at the other end her squad tallied two times of their own to close within 9-8. They then made it all the back when Frary beat VanDorpe with an unassisted marker. OWU went to make it 10-9 off the draw control, but VanDorpe had the answer against Caroline Fleming and Klabus. The stop on Klabus resulted in the Devils taking the advantage through Guadalupe after a nice dish by Barroll. Once again though OWU got a goal from Carlson with just over a minute left to have it at 10-10 with 15-minutes to play.
Caroline Pirone took the opening draw control for Dickinson and led the offensive charge into the zone, leading to an attempt by Kuehn that sailed wide. The next four shots belonged to OWU with VanDorpe beating aside a chance from Klabus. Three minutes into the fourth the Red and White grabbed the lead back when Kuehn hit the back of the cage. Two minutes later it became 12-10 as Guckes setup Guadalupe, before Herbert struck with the second unassisted marker of the period giving DC a 13-10 advantage. The Bishops fought back to within 13-11 on a Trinh goal. However, the Devils defense locked all doors and windows over the final four minutes not allowing a shot to secure the win.
