CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson women's lacrosse team got a combined seven goals between the pair of
Riley Kuehn and
Liv Yeagle, but it was not enough for the Red and White. As Tiffany Mikulis scored with 70-seconds left to allow the visiting Haverford College Fords to claim an 11-10 win in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams at Biddle Field on Saturday.
Dickinson took advantage of the first shot of the game when a foul on Lauren Anderson led to a free-position goal for Yeagle as she stashed the ball behind Annie Bravacos. Each team's keeper would record a save on the next shot they saw with
Peyton VanDorpe making her first of 13 on the day by denying Lia Herzig, before Bravacos had the answer for Yeagle. The offense would dry up over the next five minutes for both teams, until Mikulis notched her first of the contest to even things at 1-1 with 6:53 to play. That sparked a three-goal Fords run as they took a 3-1 advantage with just under five minutes left. Inside the final minute DC pulled one back when
Caroline Pirone caused a turnover by Mikulis, which resulted in
Delaney Herbert hitting the back of the net to cut the deficit down to 3-2 through one.
A stop by VanDorpe with 41-seconds off the clock in the second set the stage for
Bella Guckes to find Yeagle for the finish past Bravacos to level the score 3-3. Dickinson would have just two looks at goal over the next eight minutes with Herbert and Kuehn each going wide, while Haverford recorded five shots forcing four more saves out of VanDorpe to hold things where they were at the seven minute mark. However, the Fords continued to keep up the attack scoring four times on their next five chances to grab a 7-3 advantage with 27-seconds to play. The Red and White were determined to stop the charge before the break which is exactly what they did as Kuehn backed down her defender and ripped a shot over the shoulder of Bravacos to make it 7-4 at halftime.
Both goalies tallied a save with less than a minute gone in the third, before Nancy Tucker cashed in to grab an 8-4 advantage. A turnover caused by
Faith Parker led to Dickinson storming down the field and letting four shots go towards Bravacos, unfortunately offerings by Guckes (3) and Kuehn all missed the target. However, the Devils would indeed bag the next goal through Kuehn after Herbert posted the assist. After a goal by Abby Bonner bumped the margin to four at 9-5, Bravacos allowed the score to stay there as she denied Herbert, Kuehn and Yeagle. The Fords keeper was not to be outdone though by VanDorpe as she beat away tries from Brooke Epstein and Mikulis. The Devils would ride that momentum to two goals of their own within the final minute when
Jenna Nowland and Kuehn each solved the goalie to trim it down to 9-7 with 15-minutes to play.
Jay Carr forced a turnover by Sam Silverman inside the opening minute of the fourth, which allowed
Liz Barroll to setup Yeagle for the marker with 13:28 left. The same duo thought it was so nice they would do it twice when they linked up again just over a minute later to tie the game at 9-9. The only shot over the ensuing four minutes came from Kuehn, but she fired just wide of the mark. Then, with 7:33 remaining the Fords reclaimed a 10-9 edge when Herzig found a cutting Mikulis for the finish. Haverford continued to apply pressure as they let four more shots fly during the next two minutes, with VanDorpe recording two more saves. After a yellow card was assessed to Tucker the Red and White would find the equalizer player-up as Herbert buried a free-position chance with less than five to play. Unfortunately, DC was held without a shot the remainder of the game, while Haverford got two away and scored once to close out the win.
