CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson women's lacrosse team got four goals each from
Liz Barroll and
Emma Wynne, but it would not be enough for the Red and White to claim a pivotal Centennial Conference win over the visiting Muhlenberg College as the Mules escaped Biddle Field with a 16-15 win.
A pair of saves early in the first by DC keeper Payton VanDorpe set the stage for Dickinson to get on a roll early as
Jenna Nowland,
Faith Parker,
Liv Yeagle and Barroll all hit the back of the net behind Meaghan Haughney to give the home side a 4-1 lead with 8:29 left. Three minutes later the Mules were right back within one with Ava Milia and Jillian Kubikowski besting the goalie to make it 4-3. Each team would force one more save out of the opposing keeper inside the final two minutes, which allowed for
Delaney Herbert to setup
Gabby Guadalupe for the 5-3 through one quarter.Â
Both the Devils and Mules added a goal to their total within the first three minutes of the second as Emily Gaffney and Barroll scored for the respective sides. The ensuing three shots belonged to the guests with VanDorpe making one stop, while Emily Vaughan and Gaffney pulled two back for MC to draw even at 6-6. Wynne would have her hand in the next two markers for the Red and White as she tallied once on a free-position chance, before setting up Nowland to make it 8-7 Devils with 4:44 to play. Muhlenberg then scored on their next three shots, while Haughney stopped Herbert give the Mules a 10-8 advantage. However, Dickinson pulled one back inside the last minute thanks to Barroll making it 10-9 at the half.Â
The Devils came out of the break with their hair on fire as Wynne, Barroll and Parker cashed in on three consecutive free-position opportunities to open up a two-goal cushion at 12-10 at the 2:55 mark. Nicole Steiner and Kubikowski scored on two of the next three Mules shots to bring the game back level 12-12 with 8:09 left in the quarter. Dickinson ended a six-minute shotless stretch when Herbert fired one wide of the cage. A foul in the attacking area against Parker, resulted in a free-position tally from Gaffney. Then, off the following draw Annalisa Bio took a pass from Milia and stuck the rock behind VanDorpe, but once again DC had an answer thanks to Wynne trimming the gap to 14-13. The Devils then rode the momentum of a VanDorpe save against Milia to the equalizing marker to end the third through Herbert.
After a Dickinson turnover to start the fourth, Vaughan collected the loose ball and found Samantha Eynon for the 15-14 lead with 2:01 off the clock. The Mules recorded the following three shots forcing a save out of VanDorpe. Then, after Parker jarred the ball out of Abba Diglio's stick Wynne would once again cash in at the other end to knot the score once again at 15-15 inside the final ten minutes. VanDorpe was determined to give her team a chance to find the winner as she made two more saves against Eynon and Steiner, while Paker had an attempt batted away by Haughney. Unfortunately, for the Devils a free-position opportunity for the Mules with 76-seconds left led to the eventual winner from Steiner to make it 16-15.Â
