BUENA VISTA, Va. - Coming off their Centennial Conference playoff berth last season the Dickinson men's soccer team looked to kickoff the 2023 campaign with a strong performance against Southern Virginia University on Friday afternoon at Knight Stadium. Fortunately, for the Red and White a goal in each half was enough to secure a 2-0 non-conference victory.
The Devils were on the front-foot from the word go as
Saul Iwowo tested Dallin Chappell just 28-seconds in, before two minutes later
Colin Hofmann rang the post with 2:56 gone. DC keeper
Alexander Henrich denied Ammon Lewis in seventh minute to keep things scoreless. At the same time,Treyden Stringham then replaced Chappell between the sticks for SVU. He was immediately called into action by
Ethan Jarden, but had the answer. However, Dickinson would eventually breakthrough as with 34:22 left in the first-half Iwowo slid a pass across the top of the six-yard box to Jarden for the tap-in. Over the next five minutes each team had a chance with
Luke Finkielstein and Tanner Gonder each missing the mark for the respective sides. Dickinson had the final four shots of the period during the remaining 25 minutes with
Jackson Wolf, Hofmann and Iwowo each forcing a save, while
Geoffrey Ogenrwot went wide to end the period.Â
It took just about ten minutes into the second-half to see the first shot when
Giorgio Gayleard missed left, which led to the Knights getting out on the counter leading to Brock Hester putting a chance right in the chest of Henrich to preserve the lead. Both Stringham and Henrich were tasked with making another save during the ensuing ten minutes shutting down Finkielstein and Lewis. Dickinson then went on the attack tallying the next four shots off the boots of
Cole Jennings,
Finn Weber (2) and Jarden, tasking Stringham with turning aside just one. The Devils put the match away in the 77th, when Iwowo provided his second helper of the match by playing a ball to
Tyson Burling who deposited the ball to the back of the net. The visitors would hold the home side without a shot over the final 28 minutes to seal up the 2-0 win.
