UNION, N.J. - The Dickinson football team used a solid rushing attack on Saturday afternoon totaling 217 yards on 39 attempts en route to a 24-13 road win over Kean University at Alumni Stadium.
Kean began the game with the ball and with three rushes from Anthony Summey the Cougars setup fourth-and-one on their 25. Unfortunately for the home side a bad snap on the punt resulted in the ball being covered up on the KU1 setting up the Red and White in great shape. After
Diante Ball was thrown for a one-yard loss, quarterback
Presley Egbers scampered home from two out for the 7-0 lead (
Justin Worobel kick). The offenses struggled over the next couple of possessions with neither side reaching the opponents side of the 50-yardline. With 5:31 left in the period DC went to work starting on their own 18. Egbers began the drive with a 22-yard strike to
Bryce Peterson, before a pair of
Princeton Douglass rushes brought the rock to the KU46. Egbers then found Ball for receptions of 14 and 12 yards down to the KU14. Two straight carries for Ball did not get the Devils into the endzone, but put them in position for a 25-yard field goal by Worobel to make it 10-0 in the first minute of the second.Â
The Cougars began the ensuing drive on their 27 and watched Robbie Nungesser find three different receivers to advance the ball to the DC40. Rushes by Julian Jones and Nungesser racked up 13 yards, before Nungesser found Donte Jamison for a 27-yard TD trimming the gap to 10-7 (Logan Matthews kick). The ensuing three possessions resulted in three punts, two by the Devils
Matt Maiona and one from Nungesser. With 2:38 remaining Kean went in search of either a tying field goal or go-ahead touchdown, and by using an air assault the hosts were able to advance to the DC32. There on fourth down, Matthews lined up for a 49-yard FG, but it was snuffed out by
Alex Sulin keeping it at 10-7 through 30 minutes.
Each team went three-and-out to begin the third quarter, which put the ball back in the Devils hands at their own 12 with 10:05 left. Egbers ran for six yards on first down, before taking off for 44 two plays later down to the KU38. A four yard rush by Ball was followed by an incompletion and a two-yard QB keeper bringing up fourth-and-four (KU32). Unfortunately, for the Red and White, Egbers pass fell incomplete to give the ball back to Kean. The remainder of the period saw just two more first downs both coming from the Cougars as the game went to the fourth still 10-7 Devils.Â
A 21-yard rush by Douglass on the final play of the third quarter put Dickinson on the KU43 to begin the fourth. A two-yard carry for Douglass and a three-yard rush by Ball had DC with a first-and-ten at the KU38. The Red and White needed just one more play to add more points as Egbers found Maiona for a 38-yard "house call" stretching it out to 17-7 (Worobel kick). The ensuing Kean possession lasted just one play as
Jeremy Reid stepped in front of a Nungesser pass to give it back to the Devils on the DC35. It was "ground and pound" for DC on the drive as it began with a trio of Ball carries for seven, 39 and 13 yards respectively to the KU11. Another Ball rush moved it to the KU3, before Egbers did it on his own making it 24-7 (Worobel kick). The ensuing Cougars march looked like it would end prematurely as
Neville Krueger knocked the ball away from Nungesser, but the quarterback was able to fall on it. Nungesser made up for it in a big way as he hooked up with John Manfre Jr. for a 48-yard TD pulling to within 24-13 which is how things would end.
The Red Devils defense was led on the day by Krueger who recorded nine tackles (two for loss), including a sack and a forced fumble.
Anton Jacobs notched seven on his own, while the group of
Keon Eady,
Bram Leys,
John Prochniak,
Justin Rocha,
Brendan Walker, Reid, and Sulin each tallied five tackles on the day.Â
