HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Dickinson volleyball team looked to build on their win on Thursday night over Wilson College by returning to Centennial Conference play on Saturday afternoon with a visit to Haverford College. Unfortunately, for the Red and White they were unable to come out on top as every set came down to the wire, but ultimately the Fords escaped Gooding Arena with a 3-0 win.
Dickinson began the match strong with
Amelia Kim,
Ann Marie Patterson,
Emma Popham and
Mathilde Verbitsky all recording points to take a 7-2 lead. Three Haverford miscues and a kill by Verbitsky allowed the Devils to continue to keep the Fords at bay 11-6. However, Kira Chaney, Claire Jordan and Izabela Potocnjak engineered a 9-2 outburst to jump ahead 15-13. Dickinson responded by taking six of the next seven thanks to
Alexa Barowski,
Eliette Whittaker, Popham and Verbitsky to reclaim a 19-16 edge. Haverford once again battled back using a 7-3 charge finished off by a DC error (23-22). Two consecutive HC errors brought DC to the edge of the set at 24-23, but a kill from Chaney capped a 4-1 push by the hosts to take the first 27-25.
Three Barowski kills and a combined block between
Cassidy Davis and Whittaker made it 5-1 to start the second. Taylor Jones, Juliet Young and Chaney led a 9-3 run for a 10-8 lead, before a couple of miscues and a Popham kill brought DC to within 12-11. Barowski, Popham, Verbitsky and Whittaker helped to bring the Red and White even at 19-19. Two Jordan kills and a score by Potocnjak made it 23-22 home side, but then a slam for Verbitsky knotted the score. Unfortunately, two DC miscues ended the set 25-23.
Dickinson began the third with kills from Barowski, Davis and Whittaker to take a 9-6 edge. The Fords had an answer though as Eliana Brown, Jones and Potocnjak moved the home side on top by the slimmest of margins 12-11, before an ace and error put DC ahead 13-12. Four of the ensuing six points went the way of Haverford to make it 16-15, but
Camille Dofiles, Barowski and Davis battled back for the Red and White to make it 20-20. However, once again it would be the Fords that were able to make the decisive final push as Chaney, Jones and Jordan closed out the match on a 5-2 run for the 25-22 victory.
