Devils Blanked by Diplomats

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson volleyball team returned to the Kline Center on Wednesday night for a conference battle against the rival Franklin & Marshall College. Unfortunately, for the Red and White despite fighting hard the Diplomats left Carlisle with a 3-0 win.

Things were fairly tight early in the first set as a kill by Amelia Kim along with an ace from Ann Marie Patterson left DC trailing just 5-3. However, a score for Gianna Mangiamele kicked off a 7-1 F&M charge to take a 12-4 advantage. Dickinson would not backdown though as Alexa Barowski and Jessica Currie organized an 8-3 outburst to close within 15-12. After the group of Sydney Levins, Hannah McCarthy Liah Perez and Jada West tallied eight of the next ten to make it 23-14, points by Emma Popham, Barowski and Currie trimmed the gap to 24-17. That was when Coco Shultz took the McCarthy pass and put home the final score of the set for the 25-17 win.

Franklin and Marshall kicked off the second frame strong grabbing a 10-5 lead as Mathilde Verbitsky, Currie and Kim provided the scoring for the Devils. Kills by Kim, Patterson and Verbitsky, coupled with a block and an ace from Eliette Whittaker and Willow Palmer respectively left the Diplomats on top by a slim 13-11 margin. The visitors attempted to build up a larger gap using a 7-3 run to open up a six-point cushion at 20-14. However, the Red and White once again continued to battle back as three Diplomats errors and scores from Camille Dofiles and Patterson made it 24-20 F&M. For the second consecutive set the McCarthy to Shultz combination delivered the decisive point (25-20).

The quartet of Levins, Mangiamele, Perez and Shultz gave the guests a 7-3 advantage to start the third, before Patterson and Verbitsky brought the deficit to 9-7. The Diplomats then put together their second decent sized run of the set as Baker, Levins, Mangiamele, Shultz and West aided an 11-3 romp to double-up DC at 20-10. A combination block between Currie and Whittaker along with kills from Barowski and Kim cut the deficit to 24-18. Unfortunately, Baker would put down the final point of the match to close out the 3-0 win.
