CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - The Dickinson women's soccer team got a second-half tally from sophomore forward
Katie Vassilakos and five saves by junior keeper
Sophia Kavulich to secure their third victory of the season with a 1-0 non-conference road shutout over DeSales University on Wednesday night at the DUC Soccer Field. For the Red and White it was their third consecutive clean sheet pushing their opponents scoring drought to 270-minutes.
DeSales recorded the opening shot of the match at the 3:35 mark when Kerrigan de Meij called upon Kavulich. It would then take Dickinson until the 19th-minute for them to get their first look at goal, but
Allie Charnas pinged the post. Three minutes later Charnas met the same fate hitting another piece of iron to keep things scoreless. Holly McFarland and
Sarah Cudmore each fired a shot towards frame, however neither one scared the keeper. The last attempt of the opening period came with 37:14 off the clock as a corner kick eventually worked its way to Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week
Lila Brown who let a shot go, unfortunately Jozlyn Minnema was up to the task.
Both goalkeepers were busy inside the first ten minutes of the second-half as Kavulich had to bat away three straight offerings from Emma Ribeiro, while at the other end of the pitch Minnema had the answer for both
Ava Prisco and Vassilakos. Then in the 58th-minute DC earned two consecutive corners which amounted to just one shot off the boot of Vassilakos that sailed wide right. After Kavulich once again denied Ribeiro, the Red and White found the lid-lifter during the 65th when a good spell of possession led to
Norah Heacock playing a ball up the left wing that was run down by
Maddie St. Amand who laid a pass across the 18-yard box to Vassilakos who put it into an empty net for the 1-0 edge. Over the final ten minutes the Bulldogs desperately pushed for an equalizer, but Ribeiro hit the pipe and Elizabeth McCarthy missed to the left to let DC leave with the shutout.
